Rice prices have increased dramatically. In one of the Indian stores in Kitchener, most of the brands are around $15 for the 10 pound bag and the cheapest one is now $10. How is it like in GTA? Prices would have gone up there too but have they gone up by $4-$5 for the 10 pound bag?

Thanks for alerting all of us. The biofuel business craze, of course, is buzzing all over. And the increasingly heated debate over the costs and the benefits is encouraging the farmers to divert the land to crops that render to extract alcohol out of these commodities.

Proponents argue it's a cleaner, greener and renewable form of energy, yet critics say converting crops into fuel will simply create food shortages and skyrocketing commodity prices.

That is the reason that we find that the commodity prices are shooting high in prices all over the world. That is the topic in link.

The standard rice is still available in reasonable quantities, but the premium rice that is seen in the http://www.thestar.com/article/417871 is getting scarcer. As time progresses farmers will aim to produce the higher priced brands.

Regardless of the quality, the all of the prices have shot up by 25% here in the GTA area. I also heard rumors that the export of these and other commodities are are getting cut off, starting now. That is the warning shot that is heard from the supply end.

Standard long grain and Parboiled rice bag weighing 8Kg is currently sold for $7.99 as against $5.00 a few months back.
The supply of the lower end fragrant rice, 10 lb bag is, $ 6.99 (4.99) (No smell)
The high end of this rice that is in great demand, costs $ 10.99-12.00/10 lb bag.
The 40 lb bag that used to cost in and around $30 +/- is currently costing $ 38 to $40 for the same. I don't know if it has hit the peak yet.!

This has leveled the field for the Non vegetarians and vegetarians alike.
The price of Potash, the fertilizer that is needed in the agricultural industry, the production of which, due to demand has starting to double is moving high together with costs.
The rush to find alternate sources of energy is getting speeded up in a hurry.
Amidst all of this shortage and the increase in the cost of food stuff, such as rice and wheat and also the price of fuel and energy to the consumer, they say, that the cost of living has not gone up here in Canada, because, the cost of energy is not factored into it.

The question now is: Should the Government change the method of calculating the Cost of living to include all of the basic needs in its basket or stick to the old method of calculating the same, without paying due attention to the screams of the consumers or change the same to reflect the actual hammering the general public is experiencing at the pumps and at hands of the merchants?

It is slow in coming and when it does it will still reflect only a slight change, not sufficient to shake the ground here under us, in Canada.

No wonder the TTC workers, here in Toronto, changed their mind in mid stream.

Who is paying attention to all of this except a few on this board? I will still buy my bag of rice, regardless of the price, it is a staple commodity in our homes, and I can't do without it.

Freddie.

Raj,
I have not been to the KW Indian store. I went to the Sri Lankan shop(Udaya's at Kipling and Steels) just last week and got 8 Lb. Sona Masoori for $4. The rice is not as good as the Ravi Brand Sona Massori (The best we have tasted so far) but is OK.It also sells 8 lb. Idly rice for $4.
I had once bought Basmathi rice from a Indian store in Kitchener (10 pounds for $6.99) and it was horrible. I belive that the Indian store in KW does not sell good stuff.
Anyways, I pass by your house everyday (to and from work) and would be pleased to take your order for rice and pulse and deliver it to you as a token of our friendship. I will also try to hoard up rice and pulses for myself as soon as possible. Our apartment offers a 8' X 8' storage space in the basement for around $10 a month.

Peace out

April 29th 2008,
Raj and Others,
I visited Udhayas (Kipling and Steels) yesterday. It is a Sri Lankan Shop.
They had increased the price of Rice by 20 %.
8 Ld. Idly rice which was $3.99 is not $4.99
8 Lb. Andhra Sona Massori Rice (Eating rice) which was $3.99 is not $4.99
I have hoarded Idly rice and Sona Massori rice for 3 months

The price of pulses remain the same. Around $4.99 for a 4 lb. bag of Toor Dal.

I invite people who visit Indian / Sri Lankan stores in Scarborough and Mississauga to detail the price of Rice for CD's. I am specifically looking for Ravi Brand Sona Massori Rice. I am looking to hoard this rice in our basement locker and distribute it among friends (for the same price that I bought in the GTA and in the Guelph/ KW/ Ca,bridge area) as a token of our friendship.

Peace out
