Hi!
I will be landing soon to Canada and i need some information as i am new and don't have much information.
My friend lives in Mississauga and he is inviting me to live near their place.
I have searched on internet rent for apartment in both Mississauga and Toronto and more or less they are equal.
My some friends who lives in USA are saying that i should live in Toronto, as Mississauga is far away and it will be expensive as i have to go to Toronto for Job. I don't have Car now and i will purchase later.
I don't have clear picture as this is my first time.
Also please let me know good peaceful , safe , locality. my monthly budget is ($ 800 - 1000). I don't like basement.
I request you to please guide me and clear my doubt.
Thanks
Suresh
Hi Suresh,
Firstly welcome to Canada. I and my family came to Canada 3 years back and are residing in Mississauga. Frankly Mississauga is a very safe city to stay specially with a family as opposed to Toronto. Your friend is right in suggesting you to stay in Mississauga and its also good to stay near someone who has spent some years in Canada to get to know the place well
As regards to commuting, mississauga is well connected to Toronto by Go Bus and Go Train and also Subways. It all depends on where you choose to stay in Mississauga. If you stay near Square One (Bus Terminal) then its 30-40 minutes to reach Toronto.
As per your budget of 800-1000, I would suggest that if you can put 100-200 dollars more you can rent a Condo. Condos are much better than staying in Apartments as you got all the appliances ( wahser, dryer, Dish-washer, fridge, cooking range) inside your unit along with lot of ammenities for kids and adults to enjoy within the condo bldg. If you choose to stay in an apartment you have to go to common laundry place to wash and dry clothes and have to pay extra that will add up the cost of living.

Initially stay temporarily till the time you get a job and then lease an apartment close to your workplace .
Till then - live in a temporary place (guest house / sharing etc check the search in charcha feature / classifieds) in Toronto if you feel your most likely job is going to be in Toronto as being in Toronto you will save a lot of time commuting and be more accesible for interviews . Toronto transit is much superior than Mississauga and you can do w/o a car also .

Mississauga Square One to Downtown TO commute is not that great at this moment. There are major plans and works in progress. A lot depends upon promised federal funding though. Let's see how the economy unfolds in 2008-2009.
The proposed BRT (bus rapid transit) system, expansion of Kipling and Islington subway and GO transit terminals will drastically cut down the commute time. Read my post on City Centre http://condopundit.com/wordpress/?p=17
On an average, Mississauga condo's rent (1 bedroom-$1,300 pm) is cheaper than Toronto ($1,550 pm), and the rent mostly includes a parking space; unlike TO, where rent goes up with parking.
For a young person or a couple with no kids, TO may offer more fun than the suburbs, plus more savings on the commute time (almost 1.5 hours; to and fro).

The best way to Downtown T.O from the Square 1 area (or other parts of Mississauga) would be by Go Train.
There is a bus that goes directly to Islington Station nearby some of the condo buildings by Square 1 but it will still take about 45mins or so. Unless you choose to live right along the subway line in Toronto, you're looking at least at a 30min to an hour commute into the downtown core (TTC bus to Subway, then to Downtown).
I agree with Fido in that it would be wise to stay at a guest house for a while or find a month-to-month apartment/condo for rent or temporary sub-lease until you find what suits you best. For $800-$1000 budget you'll be tough pressed to find a 'non-basement' 1 BR unit in the core Toronto area.
