Garmin 260 with TTS for 200 $

Finally, I narrowed down on Garmin Nuvi 260 fully loaded with latest maps of US + Canada from Kinjii for $225, although the set is refurbished it comes with one year warranty. It supports TTS or Text To Speech function and is reviewed very well as entry level product for the 200 series.

As for the HTC Touch Dual phone, I figured out I need a Bluetooth GPS reciever ($50) + Tom Tom software (<$100) this can make my mobile handset as GPS navigator which I plan to use as offline reference for the second car.

Appreciate the help, tips and suggestions from all concerned.

GPS

I believe this http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4177813&sku=G145-0236 is the best price for a Garmin GPS. I bought one from them (similar model earlier this year) and I could'nt be more satisfied as it made driving a breeze on my recent trip to Los Angeles, USA.

Pramodji,

Did you buy the one with the traffic input? Are the traffic updates realtime? and Free subscription for life? Thats sounds too good a deal to let it pass...

Thanks for the link.

If you are looking for one with traffic updates, you have 2 choices
1. Free lifetime traffic, and
2. Paid subscription

Now which sensible individual will want to choose option 2 ;) The downside of option (2) is that the units are more expensive

As regards the traffic, I haven't found it much helpful, other that it lets you know before hand that traffic is slowed or stopped. I haven't tried the 'Alternate route' as yet.

One of the best ones in the market these days is Garmin 765T (anything with a 'T' means traffic)

Don't go in for the Magellan. I bought the Magellan 1475T this past summer (free traffic), it is a disaster, without getting into too many details, it just crashes while driving, and I've got 2 replacements so far. Magellan has released 4 software updates in 6 months

The advantage with Garmin is that you can upload custom POI (Points of Interest). Garmins (hack) maps are available on the net, and easy to update. I found custom POI's really handy when it comes to red light cameras and speed traps (yes, there are speed traps in Toronto). You get warning before ou get to one.

The 765T has BT, FM transmitter, TTS, traffic, mp3 player and offcourse it's a GPS :p It was on sale at Costco a few weeks ago for around $230 or so. If you can get it from the US, all the more better. Amazon has it for around US$210. In the summer the cheapest I was getting it was for US$340 (hence I choose Magellan for US$250)

Hope that helps

GPS

Hiren,

The one I bought earlier this year was not with Free Traffic but I never felt the need for the same as 680 AM always gives "free" latest traffic upgrades every 5 or 10 minutes.

Sudershan ji has explained every thing you need to know about the Garmin GPS beautifully and the link I provided earlier has the 765T Garmin unit for around $209. See this http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4177816&CatId=2372

However, I feel that the Garmint 265 WT would also give you free traffic and is a cheaper option. Here is the http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4177813&sku=G145-0236 again.

Hi Friends,

I would like to know from you, based on your experience and knowledge, I'm planning to put/install a GPS (Global Positioning System) in my Car (Toyota Corolla' 98). Please advise me if you know of specific brand or anything which may be of help? I'm looking for somthing basic that works and not jazzy or to show off. Thanks for your help and support.

Regards,
kisi

If you are looking for basic function without blue-tooth, than this TomTom ONE 3rd Edition GPS Portable Car Navigation System for $ 149.96 at Staple.ca is good price.

or Garmin nuvi 660 (@ $450.00 ) with bluetooth include. I like with blue tooth as for long drive it is good when you have to used phone frequently. I am waiting a right deal for this kind of model.

I have Garmin nuvi 265WT it is available around $ 200.00. It has blue tooth, once your phone is paired you can access your telephone number book thru GPS and dial number thru GPS. Another great feature is FM traffic reporting. The only downside: GPS Bluetooth is good when you are driving in the city, when you are driving on highways because of wind noise even sometime maximum volume of GPS is not enough to talk thru GPS.

I agree - the vol of the GPS unit (mine is an old Garmin 360) is not loud enough. I wish they had an audio out which would go into the aux in of the car stereo. This would provide super clear sound and more than adequate volume. Of course this would kill the music - but there are times when GPS is more important than music :)
