I am sure the saving that this article descibes is in terms of pennies and dimes...

You did not upset me, but just in general - look at the mirror before heading anywhere :)

And I dont think this is just pennies & dimes. I almost all the time used to wait till the end, but in lat 10 days I filled thrice when half full and all three times had to fill less for the kms that i put. To give u the numbers ... with the full tank (60L), car has gone for 600kms. But with Half tank (~30L), car had ~350kms.

This is just the one parameter that I am testing these days.

I can't control system & gas station but I do what I can do. And if it is Stiffing Exercise, one should make sure that the return is @ the highest level.

I was searching the net on this topic and I found this article in 2 parts which is pasted here with the links. This article seems to validate the point raised by Maharaj.

Stop Wasting Money When You Fill Your Car Up With Gas – Part 1

http://ezinearticles.com/?Stop-Wasting-Money-When-You-Fill-Your-Car-Up-With-Gas---Part-1&id=14037

It’s no big secret - gas prices are rapidly rising. For many consumers this can lead to serious financial problems. This article will give you some tips, guidelines, and basic advice for helping you keep reduce the amount of money that you spend each week filling up your vehicle.

If you’re like the average driver then you can expect to put 15,000 miles on your vehicle every year and average about 20 miles on a gallon of gas. What this means is that for every 10 cents that gas prices rise you can expect to spend an extra $75 a year. Unfortunately you can’t control the price of gas however, you can change some driving/car habits that will allow you to save money every time you visit a gas pump.

The biggest money waster when it comes to purchasing gasoline for your car is determined based on how well you maintain your vehicle. Since your automobile only uses 15% of the gas you pump into it with the rest expended for various other reasons in behooves you to take care of your car. Always perform the regularly scheduled maintenance on your vehicle in order to keep it running smoothly and most importantly efficiently. This will allow it to use the gasoline you put into it more economically and allow your car to become more pocketbook friendly.

Sometimes it pays to be a smart gasoline shopper. What that means is to keep your eyes open in order to spot the lowest advertised price at gas stations as you do your normal daily driving routines. I’m not advocating that you actively go search for the cheapest gas since this will increase the amount of miles you drive and end up actually costing you more money then you would save. Just be a conscious observer and when you spot a cheaper price for gas then you would normally pay feel free to stop and fill your car up.

One of the ways that you can save more money at the gas pump is by using a gasoline credit card. Normally when you use a gasoline card you receive a 5 or 10 percent rebate back on the purchase of your gas. This rebate can be significant and can add up to anywhere from $75 to $300 in a given year. Of course the amount is dependant on the number of times you fill up and requires you to consistently use your gasoline card for all gas purchases.

Here’s a good money saving tip for you scientific types out there in driving land. Gasoline becomes denser in colder temperatures. Gas pumps are set to measure the volume of the fuel that you pump and not the density. This means that if you fill up your gas tank in the cooler morning temperatures, or in the colder evening hours, that you’ll be getting better gas price economy.

In some cases you can search the Internet for the lowest gas prices. This can be very helpful if you’re planning a trip that requires a long drive. Use the Internet to find the lowest costing gas along the route you will be taking to get to your destination.

These were just a few quick tips and ideas to help you save a little more of your hard earned paycheck every time you fill your car up with gasoline. Look for part 2 of this article with even more money saving gasoline tips.

Stop Wasting Money When You Fill Your Car Up With Gas – Part 2

http://finance.articlesarchive.net/stop-wasting-money-when-you-fill-your-car-up-with-gas-part-2.html

As I stated in my previous article - It’s no big secret - gas prices are rapidly rising. This additional cost for fuel has become a financial burden for many consumers. This second installment to my first article gives more tips and advice on how to save money when filling your car up with gas.

Previously I mentioned the merits of performing regular routine maintenance on your vehicle. The benefit to do this will greatly reduce your fuel costs and save you money. It’s also a good idea to start a fuel log. The rational behind this is simple if you record all of your gas purchases and the mileage you travel you will start to develop the habit of knowing exactly how much that you are spending in fuel costs. Make sure to keep notes on where the cheapest gas stations can be found. You’ll want to use this log to see patterns of driving that you can change in order to cut down on your fuel costs.

Did you know that the average fuel economy of new cars and trucks in the United States and Canada has increased by over 130 percent for cars and 75 percent for trucks? This means that you are driving a better more efficient vehicle, which should equate to a lower fuel bill. However this depends on the level of maintenance you perform on your automobile. If you notice that your gas efficiency is decreasing it could be an indicating factor that your car needs servicing. Don’t hesitate to perform your routine maintenance. Do so will end up costing you more money then you need to spend on gasoline and could ultimately lead to more expensive car repairs.

Make sure to always purchase the freshest gasoline possible. You can do this by buying your gas at a busy service station. A slower station may not need to fill its underground pumps on a regular basis allowing for older gas to be present. Older gas can become contaminated resulting in less efficient fuel which means a higher gasoline bill for you.

Here’s a neat little bonus tip. When you have finished filling up your gas tank try turning the nozzle of the hose a full 180 degrees. This will drain a bit more gas into your tank; in some cases up to an entire half-cup that would otherwise be a bonus to the next gas customer. Over the course of a year an extra half-cup of gasoline will save you quite a bit of money.

One of the biggest gasoline money saving tips I can pass on to you deals with the octane of the gas you put into your car. Most vehicles in today’s society are built very efficiently allowing you to put 87-octane gas into them. Trust me when I tell you that your car doesn’t need the more expensive high-octane gas as long as you perform your routine maintenance. The amount of money you can save by switching to the 87-octane fuel can amount to a large sum within a year’s worth of driving.

Two final money saving tips I want to pass along include avoiding “topping off” at the gas pumps. When you purchase just a bit of gas at the gas station the pump doesn’t have enough time to really activate, resulting in short bursts of fuel that may short change you from the amount of gas that you are purchasing. The best time to replenish your gas tank is when you have half a tank or less left in your vehicle. Additionally try not to drive your car when the gas gauge is on empty. You may think that you using very little gas when your car is on empty, but you are in fact using more gas because your vehicle is running less efficiently as it tries to accelerate and decelerate in a normal fashion. Try to keep your gasoline level above the quarter tank marker.

If you take the time to use the tips presented in this article you will be able to spend less on your total fuel bill and have a little bit of extra money to do with as you see fit.

1. Drive consistently ( at a consistent pace/speed)
ideally approximate speed recommended is 55 - 65 miles per hour
88 - 105 kms per hous
( While driving on the highways )

2. For City/Local Driving avoid too much application of brakes, that means drive at a pace where you can control the speed avoid applying brakes. avoid tailgating.

3. Avoid use of A/C, heat when not required.

Most of the newer model vehicles (2006 onwards ) these days have a system to indicate fuel usage

Like: Fuel Range, GAS Range, DTE ( Distance to Empty) etc and it may vary form vehicle to vehicle.

and this indicates is how much ( DISTANCE) vehicle can go further - with the amount of GAS left in the tank and at the speed you are travelling.
( this takes into account total gas left in the tank and the travelling speed factor)

I have checked this myself and it really indicates how you can save on driving consistently. in most vehicles it indicates via a graph or with the range numbers changing back and forth depending on your speed.

I have seen this so far in ( Pontiac G6, Chevy Impala, Nissan Altima, al rented ) and my own Toyota Sienna

But this works. and important of all it controls your driving styles/habbits.

May be some one can add their experience.

I agree A/C reduces your mileage, but I doubt if Heat effects your mileage:confused:

Heat is generally obtained from the hot air from the radiator...there is not connection to compressor or any other motor, except the fan maybe, which is running anyways to keep the moisture out or the glass/windows from fogging...

Maybe, I am wrong, since I dont have an automobile background...:)

Good suggestions anyways.
