Hi All

Previously I came to Canada in 2005 and spent 2 weeks inoder to get my PR cards.

Now, I will be coming to canada for good next month. (with my family)

1. Is there any minium amount to be delcared at the immigration upon arrival?

2. Will there be any customs if we bring some jewellery items.
(initially the jewellery was not declared)

3. Will there be any taxation if we bring a PC?

4. Any important tips for second time landers will be helpful.

regards

Hi Tharun,

Welcome (back) to Canada!

The answers to your questions is as follows:

1. Since your family has already landed and obtained your PR, you are not expected to carry any minimum amount to establish your residency as you may have complied with this obligation at the time of your initial entry into Canada. However, if you are carrying more than CA$10,000 in any form (cheque, TCs, Bank Draft, Money Order, etc., etc.), you must declare it upon arrival. Remember, it is 10,000 per form, not passenger. And you are normally expected to fill one form per family (of 5).

2. Unfortunately, you may be taxed for bringing your jewellery if it has never been declared earlier or was not declared on Good To Follow list you may have submitted upon landing in 2005. read page 7 of the brochure on CBSA's website. ( http://www.cbsa.gc.ca/E/pub/cp/bsf5056/bsf5056-07e.pdf )

3. As a returning resident, you are allowed $750 worth of goods (per person) without taxes. It is likely, you may not have to pay any taxes on you PC considering your family's cumulative allowance will be more than this and you PC probably not that expensive. Make sure that your PC works on 110V otherwise you will have to invest in transformer or new power supply to make it work.

4. If you have any specific questions to ask, don't hesitate. Otherwise, there is so much out there that it will be hard to think and pen in here. There are quite a few helpful discussions on this forum that you may go through to get abreast with do's and dont's.

Good Luck in Canada. By the way, which city have you chosen to make your home?
