Dear all,
I am coming to Canada on the 18th of this month from US. In my landing papers, under remarks section, it says that I have shown C$25000 as available funds. Do I have to bring the entire amount or is it enough if I bring the minimum required (C$12000 for family of two) and show the rest in bank statement. Please advice.

Regards

Hello Tamil_Texan,

You can get the latest statement from the bank as a proof of settlement funds. You don't have to carry the entire amount with you. The immigration officer will convert the USD into CND and show it as settlement funds on papers.

That's what we did when we landed 1 month back, from the US.

Get some cash with you for your day to day expenses while you are here.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Aparna.

Hi,

Had a qn for Aparna. How long did you take to receive the PR card and SIN No. and if you have returned back did the Canadian folks athe border demand a travel paper or something or your PR card. Also, did the US customs or immigration ask about your visit to Canada.
I am going to be in the situation fo returning back to US, so please suggest.

Thanks so much in anticipation.

Speaking of bringing cash, (in addition to settlement funds) for day-to-day expenses, is it ok to use Credit cards from USA?
That way one can spend, and pay off credit cards online.
Is there a drawback to doing that? Like would the credit cards charge extra for converting Canadian Dollar to USD?

It took 3 weeks for us to get the PR Card and SIN No.
Since you will be returning back to the US after doing the landing, you can ask your friends to mail SIN & PR card to you.

You won't have any interaction with Canadian authorities while going back.

The US immigration did ask about our visit. We said we came to Canada for doing our landing process and now returning to the US.

He also asked if we are going to join back the same company as the paper says, and we said yes.

We waited in the queue for more time... the actual work did not take more than 5 mins. But just make sure that you carry all your documents pertaining to H1 & Employement... just in case if they ask for it.

Hope this helps.

Yes, you can use MC / Visa without any problems. Am not sure about others. Some places like hotels and all.. do accept Discover too.

I think Bank of America charges 4% fee for using the card outside US, where Discover doesn't.

Just confirm with your credit card company / bank if they charge any fees for using the card outside US, and you need to tell them that you will be using the card in Canada.

I think its always better to carry some cash with you for misc. expenses and food.

All the best to you both.. Shree65 & aseem_mal.
Have a safe trip and Welcome to Canada.

Regards,
Aparna.
