I highly doubt that any ex KGB guy who has practically reactivated that security apparatus under the FSB will seriously claim to be a democrat, much less pine for talks with Gandhi.
I agree that Putin seems to be the right guy for Russia's self interests. If he thinks 'human rights/freedoms' comes in the way of that, he is willing to sacrifice the same e.g: Chechnya, killing journalists etc.
