Canada is the home to thousands of refugees who come to this land every year. All these refugees (legal or otherwise) are able to survive here. So I am pretty sure that you can get some job. Tim Hortons and the like have a lot of turnover of employees and hence they hire through out the year. You have to give your application to every one of these companies ( not necessarily walking distance to your home but on a transit line) and one will call you.
References are a eyewash and you can always condition your spouse / friends to be your references. You can also put some dummy Canadian experience in your resume and then say that your friend was the supervisor there. So it is not a big thing. I have done it all the time. This is the only way that these people will atleast call you for an interview.
Hope you are aware that after the recent recession, all easy but high paying jobs (those reserved for immigrants excepting IT and Finance jobs) are all gone. If you go through Redfalg deals (which I have been doing to pass on important discussions that the native borns are talking about to CD's), you will find that even native born people are finding it very hard to land in a job despite being born, raised ,educated here and also having talked in English from birth (but then most have U of T history or philosophy degrees as an example). Soon they will start blaming the immigrants for the loss of these jobs. So a professional job or a technical job is even more hard to find these days.
All the best
Peace

Thank you
May be it's bitter but true ..How someone is expected to gain a Canadian experience when nobody wants to hire w/o it ? So its the horse behind the cart story ...
I support TK on this completely . If someone is qualified , he should be given a fair chance to prove it .

Please do not mislead others by encouraging them to provide fake experience and references ..... doing it yourself is bad enough... its best you leave it at that.
