My exposure to the latest gadgets is limited. I am told that you can have a camera on the PCs so that can talk/see the folks in India (VOIP?). I am thinking I need to set up something like this to the seniors in the family in India. Does it work good? How r the pictures?
(the latest India Today has an article on the wi fi tech advancement in India)
Any suggestions/tips/advice, much appreciated.

Yes, it works. I have been doing this for years. Audio & Video both. It is much better with High Speed Internet at both Ends.
Yahoo & MSN Messenger, both are good. There are plenty other available - but I dont use any other.

Thx Maharaj.
We have the high speed here. If we get high speed in India thru sify or someone, will the audio and video both work well? Should we use Yahoo & MSN Messenger for this?
(again my knowledge in this is limited)

Video will depend largely on the connection speed for your foks in India, as well as their pc config.
My parents have an oldish Celeron...recently they bumped up the RAM to 512MB running WinXP.
Video is now better but still freezes, which w figured is probably due to their speed. You might not know that download and upload speeds are different.
Download speed are fast (1MB, 2MB etc) but upload is much slower. It's the same everywhere in the world. So what ISPs mean when they say 'speed' is the download speed.
My parents, for e.g., can see me fine but everything goes out of whack when I try to view them - this is because their upload speed isn't fast enough.
Also, speed advertised by the ISP and the actual speed will likely be two different things. If your folks have a good connection these should not be a problem.
Mercury,
How does it work? Is the skype good?
alexm,
I will get them a brand new desktop along with a high speed. Their knowledge of PCs is very limited. Basically I want everything to be set up for them with no or minimum hassles for them.
