Val,
I agree with you 100 % but since my wife is in a good job here it is very hard for me to move from the GTA (Greatest trap area). Besides i have a 35K debt in Canada. Recently a person known to me got a very good job in architecture though he was not qualified for it. So i know about UAE. It is very easy to get and retain jobs there. I hope i can move out from GTA soon with god's grace once i repay my debt.
Another factor is that i have been here for 4 years, have a job (though insecure and lousy), have a six month old daughter. All this makes my decision to move more difficult.

TK:

You arent alone. Many people (id say MOST) have debt they carry(not including mortgage debt). I did some research online and I found

http://www1.on.hrdc-drhc.gc.ca/ojf.jsp?lang=e§ion=Profile&noc=2251

This says the average income for people in your occupation is $44K a year. Also the majority of the jobs (43%) are in Toronto. I understand you are not very happy in your current position however you are not a 'labourer' as you keep calling yourself. You are putting down your own profession by doing that.

You also may realize that there are very few jobs today that are \"Secure\" because every industry/occupation are affected by many factors. So I wonder sometimes if you are being realistic. I am not trying to pick on you but you do come across very negatively about your job, the city you live in and the suitability of Canada for your children.

Having been raised here myself by two educated parents who made the best of their situation and gave us everything inspite of their struggles..I think you are not looking at the whole picture.
However my disclaimer is: these are just my views.

Why arent you more happy that at least your wife is in a good job? Do you believe only the man's career is important? can you not start your own business now with the experience you have?

As I have mentioned before to you..it takes a lot of energy to be negative. Why not redirect yoru energy into finding solutions for your situation.

Finally, I think I speak for many here when I say: ask for any help (information, resources) from CD members... everyone is very helpful and willing to support you in your transition.

best of luck

Do any of you guys remember Prabhub on this forum - the one who advised about eating leftovers at Ikea?

You might ask me what is the relation of my question to this thread..........I think it is intimate.

TK saab,

1. The company pays you only $12.5 per hour and expects you to work above 44 hours. Considering your qualifications and experience the company management is taking full advantage of the fact that you are an immigrant and exploiting you. Such a company is unethical so please do not get stressed by your work pressure. The moment you finish your day's work leave everything aside and enjoy your family life. You are lucky to have been blessed with such a sweet daughter so spend your free time with her. In life family and health comes over everything else.

2. If your mistakes cause willful death of someone you can be liable for criminal negligence. For all other mistakes the company assumes responsibilities.

3.Doesn't your company have a quality program in place? Aren't critical designs reviewed either by a team or checked by a second competent person? If there is no such a system in place then its not your fault so let the company pay for its employee lapses. After all to err is human.

4. Before you work on a design document the critical parameters/ requirements as requested by the client and foward a copy of the same to your boss, client and save one copy for yourself. Make sure that the file is not erased or deleted. Mention the project name, requests made by, the date and once this is approved start working on the project. In case if you do not get a confirmatory e-mail from your client or boss send them a reminder that you have commenced work on the project on the assumption that the requirements are acceptable to them.

5. Do not be intimidated by anyone in life. Your client is abusing you because he probably thinks that because he is an italian he is superior to you. Contrast this with the way the italian lady is worshipped in India. Spend around $90 and buy a voice recorder and keep it in your pants. The next time he absuses you record it but say nothing. Back up the recording on a CD/DVD. Continue doing this for 3 or 4 times. Consult a psychiatrist and complain that you are suffering from depression because you are subjected to racial humiliation at work. Get the psychiatrists report and SUE your client for 10 million dollars.

6. In case if your boss makes any mistakes in designs make a copy of the drawings. Keep doing it and in case if you want to leave this country for good, post the file to the concerned authorities.

7. You have a contact in UAE so why don't you plan to set up your own architectural business over there?

One more thing I like reading your post's. Keep up the good work.

Regards,

Nikhil

Answer to TK-Saab or PrabhuB or whatever.....

$ 12.50 a good salary? You must be joking, this is peanuts!
For somebody who has Canadian qualifications and The Canadian experience this is absolutely peanuts!

Most drafting guys in BC work on contract basis and make much more than that. Although you do not get the benefits of a permanent job.
For newly arrived Architect immigrants it is very difficult to continue in the same profession without further Canadian education.
As you know the building code, by-laws, wood frame structures, working style etc. are completely diverge.

For new Architects, my advice is to get Canadian upgrading education and volunteer in an Architects office to gain the valuable Canadian Experience (very very vital in this industry). The communication skills in English should be excellent, if weak please take on language courses.

I have been here 5 years, first year spent in upgrading college, next 2 years in designers office with min. pay (to gain the Canadian Experience). By an added advantage of international experience which the locals lacked, this background suddenly became indispensable.

The last 2 years have been phenomenon with salary skyrocketing and employers offering bonuses and promises to take on their contracts.
I agree, the flourishing construction industry in BC has played a major role.

I only take jobs on contract basis either working from home or from their office at my convenience. This suits me fine, instead of a dull permanent 9 to 5 job. As mentioned in an earlier post it still is a stressful job....

Disclaimer : This conversation is between me and TK-saab. No third party can can take us to court with these conversations. This is provided to you as a courtesy and an inspiration to newly arrived Architects and Draftspeople only.
