I was at a seminar during lunch time and the speaker was talking abt health/diet, etc. She told that the calories someone need depends on the weight. That weight in lbs multiplied by 12 gives the daily calories the person needs.
e.g. 150 lbs x 12 = 1,800 calories per day.

Here is a formula to calculate calories - based on a health magazine
Adult male:
66 + (6.3 x body weight in lbs.) + (12.9 x height in inches) - (6.8 x age in years)
Adult female:
655 + (4.3 x weight in lbs.) + (4.7 x height in inches) - (4.7 x age in years)
any comments ...??
Hello!
I am 36, 5'-8" , and 200 lbs.
My calorie intake as per the formula works out to 1895.4
Patrick says that a 150 lb. man would starve at 1800 calories but this is in line with what DIO said.
So what should i eat per day to get just 1895 calories?

Here are my two cents.
I am not aware how to calculate calories. But, i go on the USDA website. I think the link is provided on one of the post above. Put the information asked i.e. age, weight, exercise level. It will tell you how many servings of carbs, proteins, fat, fruits and vegetables you should eat.
A very rough calculation. Read the labels on bread etc.
1 serving = 15 gms of carb approximately. Any bread generally varies from 18 gms per slice to 30 gms depeding on how thick the slice is. Now white bread and whole bread slice may have same gms of carb per slice but whole wheat bread will make you feel full with lower number of slices because of its fibre content.
1 serving = 1/3 cup of cooked rice (measuring cup) You can get measuring spoons of 1/3, 1/2 and 1 cup in any dollar store or if you want good ones, I thought I saw steel ones in IKEA for under $5.
Homemade chapati. I count 1 serving of carb.
Fruits - 1 small apple, orange, peach = 1 serving.
I donot count veg carbs as generally they have low glycemic index. However, potatoes, green peas, corn, broad beans, plaintain are not considered vegetables but carbs like rice and bread.
Beans, lentils - 1/3 cup gives you 1 serving of carb and 1 serving of protein. However, the carb is low glycemic i.e. it releases sugar slowly in the blood. This makes you feel full longer and reduces intake of food and helps in weight loss.
Fats - Thumb rule - 1 tablespoon = 1 serving
