Talk to the person at the counter. Not all whey protein is the same. I usually steer clear of the wal-mart variety.

Whey protein is easily absorbed into the body. It's also promoted as having immune system boosting properties. However, i do not think that's clinically proven on humans, only on mice :p .

Personally, I find that I fall sick(colds) less often when I add whey protein to my diet and exercise regimen vs just exercise.

Being south indian, I was raised on mainly white rice with chappatis 2-3 times week. Daal (with rice) was the protein source.

Now my diet is 2 slices of whole what bread for breakfast wiht coffee (dip and eat). At least I will get abt 10 grams of protein in the morning. Lot of red beans, chole, skim milk, etc. Note that we need abt 50 grams of protein everyday. I dont think vegetarians get it. Non-veg has lots of protein in it (correct me here). They get their share of protein (almost) everyday.

mmmmmm, daal.

heres a link of protein content in common foods
http://www.annecollins.com/protein-foods.htm

When you increase intake of food, you also increase the fat/cholestrol etc not just the protein content in these foods.

However, the emphasis on protein MAY be exagerrated since the daily requirements are often revised by experts. There are a lot of biased lobbies putting out info. The health food and supplement industry(unregulated at best) itself adds to the misinformation by overemphasising protein needs. So do the vegan societies by under emphasising it. The jury is still out.

Thanks to a friend's father who tought me pranayam and yoga , i am benefitting a lot from doing regular yoga and breathing excercises....and i am surprised by the results in helping lose weight.

I feel that weight loss process is more effective when proper intake is combined with with yoga .

I am having a lot of trouble getting exercise. Any suggestions.

I find that going to GYM is not my thing. I may do it for few days and then give up. I like to build the exercise into my routine. Today, I try to walk for 1/2 hour around lunch time everyday. (Tough I admit, I will not do my 1/2 hour walk if I have slightest excuse) Over the weekends there is a lot of mall walking, sometimes 2 to 3 hours. Weekends, I walk to few closer places rather than drive. I had never exercised before and find it difficult to do it now.

Hi Lana,

I used to go to the gym religiously when I was single...but married life, a full time job and other family commitments just take up too much of my time and energy and trying to incorporate going to the gym seems like torture!

But I knew I needed to start taking control again and invest some time on myself for my own benefit. So in small ways, I have started to do exactly that.

I have a dog who needs to be taken for a walk everyday (yes, even in the cold of winter - he has his own little booties :) ) So taking my dog for a walk is also like taking myself for a walk. Of course you don't need a dog to go walking - just a comfortable pair of sneakers. The best way to get the most out of walking is to put your foot directly in front of your other foot when taking steps, not side by side as when walking normally...this helps to work the calf muscles more.

Also, now is the time to get out and about in your garden (or backyard, whatever you want to call it) and get your green fingers working - you'd be surprised at how many calories doing garden/yard work will burn, esp. on a hot day. Don't forget to drink lots of fluids.

I know that time is a factor when trying to incorporate exercise into daily life. But you can:

Use stairs (if available) instead of an elevator.
Take walks on your break/lunchtimes.
Go for walks in the evening instead of watching TV, it will help to digest your dinner.
Even doing just 20 mins of rigorous exercise a day and you notice a difference in your overall wellbeing - you can do this by jogging around the block or in a park if there's one available close to you.

I have a very big grocery store opening on the 10th May close to where I live. There will be a Good Life Fitness centre in there too...I am going to join and make a real effort to go regularly.

If anyone else has other suggestions on how to incorporate more exercise into daily life, and/or ways to cut down on carbs/fat intake in food, please do tell!!!

Lana,
Try taking the TTC to work (it is summer now). Also try to use the fire escape (stairs) instead of the elevator.
Moderate your diet and try to excersice while watching TV instead of sitting on the couch. It helps in the long run.
