Often you will hear that one needs to find some voluenteer job initially to gain canadian experience and hopefully it will change to a permamnent position later.
Lets find out if it really is true.
Can all such people who have used this technique to successfully penetrate the job market please post in this thread so that others can benefit from it.
Please let us know:
your qualifications and (Indian) work experience
which organization you joined here to voluenteer
If and when the position became permanent
or if it helped you gain foothold into another organization because of valuable Canadian experince gained

I know a desi MSW from MS Uni Baroda with 5 yrs social work exp. Got indian MSW degree evaluated as equal to canadian MSW and is also a member of social workers asson of ontario & canada(is mandatory for SW job). This desi tried for SW job in every possible place viz. GTA hospitals, schools, children+women aid org., etc... no luck. Finally joined some catholic organization who builds your profile, organizes some courses for free and does voluntary placement in the field of your choice. At present, this desi is placed at a Women Shelter. This is a very good experience to learn ins and outs of canadian social work.
We have to wait till Feb 2004 to see if this desi is offered a full-time(paid)job at this place or other shelters.

She worked for Walmart full time all this period. Now with this 5 months voluntary placement(mon-fri 9-5), she works weekends at Walmart. But her husband has a good job. Hence they can afford. If she gets hired in one of these Women Shelters chain as a social worker, then it is worth the hassle. If not, do MSW again at UofT or Wilfred Laurier.

She also did volunteering as a Counselor for VON(VICTORIAN ORDER OF NURSES) for 1 yr. It did not fetch any SW job.
