\\\"True Indian\\\" here we go defining .... This is just an attempt to define, t

There certainly are neumerous ways to define this complex term

1. Who is certainly born in India :D
2. Understands, respects, follows and preaches the \\\"Values\\\" of being an
Indian to others ( others meaning, Non-Indian borns, Not -True
Indians, ABCDs) :D
Indian values being - Respectful to others, seniors, parents and
other relatives and family members, obidient,
religious, cultured, respects other's views, helping in nature, underrstands family values

3. Remeber this Dialougue from a Famous Film

\\\" Not everyone who goes to temple regularly is a Pujari / preist / or even a Bhakt\\\" - but certainly gets general respect of being religious and sincere.

\\\" Not everyone who goes into a Bar everyday is a drunkard either\\\"
- But cerrtainly gets tainted. and is called a spoiled person.

The moral of being a good Indian is

- Do not do anytihng that will tarnish the image of the country India
- Do things that will make the country and countrymen proud to say
they are Indians

To me it does not matter whether you live in India or abroad, all that matters is how well are you follwing the Indian Values.

Will it not hold good if we replace the 'Indian' and 'India' in the above sentence with any other country? Dont those values apply to any good humanbeing?

Is the certificate of being a 'good indian' necessary in the after life or something?. Its probably necessary if I were to run for political office in India...actually, its probably only necessary to make people believe so. :D

Good attempt at a definition...however I have one minor objection...my children were both born outside India,,,but I feel they fulfill all the other conditions that you define...I would still call them Indians...many are born in a land but display little respect to it and its values and heritage....whilst the contrary may be true as well....possible?

I do not tell my kids they are Indian. I tell them they are Canadian with Indian Heritage. I want them to be proud of both their heritage and their homeland.

My biggest wish for them is that they grow up to realize that they are much more than being Canadian or Indian.

No, technically your childres are only PIO's ( Person of Indian Origins),
However you can still induce the "Indian values" in them and raise them in a way they adopt all Indian values not just your name.

honestly it all depends on a "good" parentism"

I know there are here people in your situation and have suceeded in making their kids follow all Indian culture, tradition and values.

Try doing the follwing;
> Making a trip back to India at least once every two years, keeping
them in touch with your /our Homeland and the culture over there.
> Sharing with them the culture and values
> Also make them speak at least the "Mother toungue fluently" including
writing. - if required put them in tutions etc.
> visitng religious places ( temples ) regulasrly and also conducting the
pujas at home as well, specially for all ocasssions etc.
> If they are girls then you can make them learn cultural dances etc.

So it is all about, how we follow the "Indian Values" ourselves and how we preach them to "Other Non-Indians or Not True indians" This is what I exactly meant in my earlierr post.

Well said...a global citizen is an ideal worth aspiring to. I have had the honour of spending a week with neil Armstrong and something that he told me will always remain etched in my brain...he said he became a misfit in this world the moment he saw the entire earth (on his return) without any boundaries. He was never able to reconcile states, nations and other differenecs that he did not see from space...all he saw was the most gorgeous sight he has ever beheld.

My kids too will respect peopple from all walk of life, nationalties, religions...and honour the land which is mother to their parents....in that sense their essence will be Indian whilst their being will be the best that they can absorb of everything and veryone around them.

Ture, you are right,
But since the original intent of the thread was focusing on "Indians" only. irrespective of languages and /or Mother toungue. I defined it in context of India. So i would leave it at that for now.
But yes the principles mentioned apply to any country/religion and their Citizens.

Big B,
Can you tell us more about your self. Being associated with Neil Armstrong is a thing which even many millionaries are not able to do.
Were you with NASA at any point of time (i mean working there?).
To me , you sound like a person of great academic background and/or a millionare?
Any reason as to why you choose to stay in Canada. (Please be as discreet as possible. This is a public board and hence reveal only what you want to reveal or send me a PM. I have already PM'ed you).
and BTW, What Neil Armstrong had confided in you had already been published in an article.

I agree, but children do catch these things well when they are young. And when they are young as a parent you should teach them some good values and culture.
So some kind of preaching is required for kids, And with this, as they grow, they tend to incline more towaards these values.
Nothing comes automatically, and particularly this subject, it is not that easy. you know that right?
