Could all those who have gone thru the initial settlement process please thow some light on this

1. how much money is recommended for inital settlement period ?...it may sound like a dumb question ... obviously the more the better ....
but what i am trying to figure out is how sufficient is initial settlement sunds of 10-15K for a bachelor or even a couple without kids ....i do not plan to run for any job is the first 3-4 weeks .... after a month of course i will start to work.

2. are $8/hr jobs sufficuent for a single person to survive without dipping into the settlement funds?

BM,
Its 6 yrs ago, but i think it is still true, if you are a PR and been in Canada for about 1 year, you can go to college as a fulltime student and avail of govt guaranteed loans...which can then be paid off in about 20 yrs. There also may be a small stipend included in the loan amount. It may be ideal for people who want to get back into their field after the first year at undesired jobs. There are also bursaries available if you meet some conditions. For more info you have to look into the programs in which you wish to enroll in.
I am one of those who took advantage of this option. It is one of the reasons I was able to get out of the initial rut.
Hope this helps.

Mishtar,
TO..I think you can share living space at about 600+/ month
groceries another 150-200$/month. Another 200 for traveling/ttc etc.Aim for about 8 months minimum.
For couples living space may be more expensive depending on if you are ready to compromise on privacy.
10-15k is a good amount for a bachelor.
Regarding 8$ being sufficient...do the math to find out:). If both people are working then it may be a bit easier at that wage obviously.
Ofcourse you have to be frugal.

First of all visit some of the job postings on thestar.ca and workopolis.ca to understand what kind of jobs are being advertized, what EXACTLY is being demanded by Canadian employers.
Next you need to develope some of those very skills to eventually land a job in your chosen field.
Make sure you understand the concept of baby sitter as that a big one here.
Initially you have 2 choices. Either settle in for a month, and then go for some low level job such as telemarketing, labour jobs, PC tech support, bank call centre etc. Then start search for job in your field after 5-6 months once you know the "inside" details of "system" Just keep in mind that labour jobs or odd jobs are dead end jobs and at one point or other you will have to take the risk and move on in search of grener pastures.
or
If possible, upgrade your skills here by taking up some courses and see if you can get in somehow in a company offering similar work conditions that you can later put on your resume as Canadian experience. This is preferred choice but need deeeeeeeeeeeep pockets as you may not be able to work for almost a year. You can of course get a loan etc.

How much do the Vendor certifications help in job search?

I have few like MCSE, CCNA,CLP,CLS (Basically Lotus products and Microsoft). Since the skill are tested on the same grounds as in Canada don't you think that it could be helpful ?

Other than "canadian exp" hurdle, with the above certifications, you should not have much difficulty in getting a Helpdesk tech support(entry level)job for troubleshooting TCPIP communications, Routers, Integrated IBM registers, DSL Modems, etc... which should fetch you about $20/hr. Other than banks, there are quite a few canadian+american helpdesks like Reitmans, Venetor, NCR, IBM(for canada post,HBC), Comark, etc.... who offer such contractual jobs. This exp. can lead to some fulltime perm IT jobs.
