Hi guys

I am new to the forum but have been viewing the discussions for some time. I had landed in Canad ain April 2003. I am currently based in South Africa as a Software Consultant. I am Mechanical Engineer from IIT Kharagpur and MBA and cleared 2 levels of CFA in India.

I have been planning for action plan for settling in Canada. In my view the current frustation is primarily because of current economic situation in USA, and opportunities will get better with turnaround in Economy.

However, I feel that adequate financial planning and career planning is important for every one to successfully settle in Canada.

I need opinion for people who have settled in Canada with various levels of success, regarding an ideal settlement action plan.

Qualified immigrants should:-

1.Take some short term courses which can help you earn more than 8-10CAD/hr.

2. Plan on building assets (by taking as much settlement funds as possible especially NRIs from other countries) by going for house mortgage. By doing this you are buiding asets as you pay pay the mortgage. After few years house rent will not be your montly expense.

3. There after you have more luxury of taking on ambitious plans by readjusting your career goals, upgrading skills.

I feel a 5 years plan with proper planning and focus does enhance your chances of success.

I hope my post was not gibberish and woul like opinions/suggetions for benifit of immigrants at different stages of settlement.

thanks

Very valid suggestions. Especially for those who can afford to follow them. Also, the older you are (say 35 on) the more important #2(settlement funds) becomes. #1 and #3 are not as striaghtforward as it seems in theory but valid nevertheless.

Desis from different walks of life come to Canada.

So far I have met desi landed Docs, Engrs, IT profs, Physiotherapists, Radiologists, social workers, Accountants, salesmen, mktg men, teachers,..................each person has his own financial background, confidence level, family background, family size,etc... hence, it is very difficult to tailor an action plan for them.

As for Plan#2, I have found most of the NRIs bringing good cash. FOB from India find it difficult. Some even have debts back home.

But we can surely come out with suggestions with regards to the skills that they can build while in India so that they can try for a better paid job.

We recently discussed that an exp CA with IT skills has better chances of getting acctg. job.

We can find out more about other profs.

How much do the Vendor certifications help in job search?

I have few like MCSE, CCNA,CLP,CLS (Basically Lotus products and Microsoft). Since the skill are tested on the same grounds as in Canada don't you think that it could be helpful ?

HI All

Thanks for your opinions guys. I agree that it cannot be generalised but talking of specifics. Can you give some short skill trainings that can help you atleast get a refined labour jobs to start with. I observed that forklift operators are better paid than general labourers and it is pretty easy to learn.

What are other hot careers? Industrial automation?? Can I learn PLC programming as a software engineer. Can courses like Oracle DBA be helpful? There are some voluntary communit jobs that I have heard can enhance your chances if getting good jobs and enhance your contacts in Corporate.

thanks

Yes every landing immigration should land with a 5 year Plan in Canada.

All the desi should "Hope for the best and prepare for the worst"

I dont know how plan 2 suggested by ManG works for new immigratnt since they dont know where they will get their dream job.

This site is usefull for job prepartion and also finding out some voluter job..

Upgrading carrer skills is also a good thing to do by joining a good college as a parttime or fulltime. I want to know more about how to get a good scholorship or assistinship in college. By being a PR what is the adavantage we get while we choose to study either Fulltime or parttime.

Any comments are aprreciated

ManG

Is that G in ManG ghosh by any chance :-)
You got it quite right in your first post in this thread.
The key is to come prepared with lots of money so that you don't have to run for factory jobs within hours of landing here.
Rather one should realx, enjoy new environment and "observe" so that you can blend in easily.
What exactly are you doing as a software consultant?
