Hi CDs,
You may please consider this new topic in continuation of the other topic : 'Getting in touch with parents'. Apart from calling them or sending them our family photos, here is something which we did in Dec. 2004 (or rather they themselves did because they found out the source and we just sent them the money for ticket and other expenses).

My parents went for a Tirath Yatra along with 50 other old couples. Two of them were from Canada and they had gone to India esp. for this Tirath yatra. There is a company called "Shri Shiv Shankar Tirath Yatra Company(Regd.), Rishikesh". They conduct Tirath yatras every year or sometimes twice a year. My parents went to that Yatra and I can't tell you how happy they were after returning from this yatra. Even they didn't expect that yatra to be so good. It was 43 days and the organizers did everything. The oldies did not have to worrry about anything. The organizers had all the trasportation and accomodation arragements. Though at some places they had to rest in the railway's rest/waiting room but they did not mind because it was the whole group, you know and when you are with a group, you tend to ignore these small things.
The organizers had their own cooks who would prepare food in the train with 'Desi Ghee' and three times tea. Then they had first aid and postal facility along with Mobile phones (for oldies to call their kids while travelling.....it was so exciting for them too), the Yatra was video recorded and a VHS copy was given to all Yatris, then they had two-three 'Mundus' who would massage the feet and shoulders of tired Yatris everyday, they also had 'Chowkidaar' who would guard their belongings while they are on Yatra, had a guide who would explain the importance of the 'Tirath Sthal'.......
Almost whole India was covered in 43 days including 3 days in Nepal for Pashupati nathji. Some of the places they visited were:

Ujjain (Mahakaaleshwar)
Omkaareshwar
Dwarka
Somnath
Shirdi
Kanyakumari
Goa
Ooti
Kaanchipuram
Konark temple
Tirupati Balaji
Kolkata
Gaya
Kathmandu
Allahabad
Varanasi
Ayodhya etc..etc..

Last but not the least, they had 2-3 Mahatmas and a Bhajan Mandli with them so whenever they would return from Tirath Sthal and do 'Vishraam' in train AND everyday early morning and evening, Bhajan Mandli would do Bhajans and mahatmaji would do Katha.

The cost of the ticket including other transportation and accomodation was apprx. INR 18,000 per person. I don't know if the price has changed now but it was in Dec. 2004.
I am not mentioning the contact address and the telephone numbers of the company (because some of our friends may think that I am their agent or something) but if someone wants to have their contact details, please e-mail at

or call me @ 416-409-8291.

What is the best a child can do his/her parents in India at their old age?.

The answer is what Sanjeev M has narrated.

God Bless Him and his Family for setting this example and giving us the lead.

In Hinduism Karma is what you deposit in your Life's Savings Account. You need to face your Bad Karma in the same life during this Kalki Avatar of Lord Vishnu. The objective of pilgrimage is to wash your bad karma, pay homage to your passed away elders and at the same time pray for the good of the young ones. In older times people went to vanavas. In later times they go on Thirth Yatra.

All our Multi Storied Houses, Benz Cars and Diamond Jewellery will mean nothing at our end, it is only our good karma which will stand with us when we meet our creator.

Sanjeev M:Please post the contact details and website(if possible)of this organizer and it would not mean any advertisement for such a holy/religious and inspiring cause. Your posting has inspired me to set something up for my old mother in India.

God Luck and God Bless!

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....

"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"
