For those who are doing well back home and money is the only motivating factor to come here...they probably should not.
Personally, I used to make that amount and more 7yrs ago in India. Then I came to Canada. While I took a few knocks initially, I have managed to find my way and now the opportunities available to me professionally are much better than it was back home. I also have the satisfaction of being able to ply my trade at an international level (this may not be as factor for many people for a number of reasons). Add to this the standard of living that is available to my kids here and its a no-brainer. I'd rather be here anyday. Now I am not sure 'Standard of living' is the right expression' here. I have known people who think that having 2 maids and driving 3 cars is what standard of living is all about. When I say standard of living I mean the things available to me even if I am considered the middle class in Canada. I am not talking only about schools, libraries, parks etc. I am also talking about the mindset of people . e.g: I found it difficult to explain to my 4yr old on our last visit to Mumbai why a girl around her age was on the street, filthy to the bone, without supervision and asking me for money whilst cradling a 2 yr old in her arms. I also did not know how to react to the situation. Should I ignore the child and set a bad example for my daughter or pay attention to the child and risk being mobbed? I chose the first option and it was painfull. I also realised then that a few years ago I would not have even thought twice about ignoring that little girl. She would be just another 'bhikari' back then. I for one do not want my daughter growing up like that.
Then again, maybe thats just me. Different folks have different priorities.
p.s: I do know that there are homeless people here too, most of them are there due to choices they have made and therin lies the difference. I have not found any disheveled 4 year old, with a 2 year old in her arms, begging on the streets yet. Anybody who has been to Mumbai knows that such sights are common there. Frankly, I have chosen to be a coward and run away from that. Atleast for now.
