Do you know of any buildings where they allow newcomers to rent on a month to month basis?

I dont think there are any.
there maybe some short term furnished/unfurnished rentals geared towards executives, but will be quite expensive.

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.

Try private ads in newpapers directly from the owners of condominiums or houses/basements apartments....you will find private owners more flexible towards month to month rentals.

You can break a year long lease for some apartments for a fee....which moslt involves forfieting of last month's rent.

people leasing out their basements might be open to that. i know a friend who is living in a basement on a 3 month term.

Month to month rental is usually available for Basement apartments or private accomodation. Lease for high-rise condos is usually for 1 year. Unless you can find someone who wants to assign his nearing end lease to you (with the permission of the landlord , of course) you will have tough time finding one.

Is there a particualr reason as to why you want to go month to month instead of 1 year lease. You answer may help us in providing any other alternative(s)/suggestions to you.

Go for a basement and stay there for 6 months to 1 year and based on that yo will get a proper apartment. Some friends I know did this. They were having trouble getting apartment right after landing.
