I wish to take this a little further please guys ........ for my own information and for evey else s 2 reach a pragmatic unbiased view .

Firstly its not true that in the absence of MKG we wudnt have attained freedom ----- there s a time n cause for everything and other countries have also attained their freedom sans a Gandhi .

Secondly even Lenin s structure and doctrine were uprooted decades after he revolutionised Russia .

By no means any offence to a man regarded as one of the greatest in the century but just debating a little bit more .

1. Is it true that while Sardar Patel was favored 2 b the PM by every1 Gandhi g alone stood for Nehru and cited an excuse for unity in making him the PM ?

2. Is it true that while India was getting partitioned Gandhi g was in Calcutta ?

3. Is it true that Gandhi g instructed Nehru to change the name of his son in law from Feroze Khan to Feroze Gandhi after his mother s maiden name Ghandi ?

4. How much are Nehru and Gandhi g responsible for Kahmir burning 2day? Was it easier for India 2 govern Kashmir right form start?

5.Nehru - Jinnah were in congress then why did Jinnah join Muslim league. Why did MKG not persuade him to curb his political ambitions.

However Partition was in India s favor undoubtedly ........... read b/w the lines .

Manasvi .

Manasvi, You are wasting your breath! These people don't possess the intellect necessary to analyze issues objectively, they have to make everything a personal vendetta. Getting them to argue an issue based solely on facts is next to impossible.

Man, some of the stuff in this discussion sounds so highschool, its not even funny. :D

DT, you can add me to the list of people here who agree to disagree with you on this one. Blaming Gandhi for all of India's problems is plain naive. Sure, you may choose not to agree with some of his stuff (as I don't as well), but to put the blame squarely on him for India/Pak problems and to assume that India would be some superpower above the states if not for Gandhi sounds rather amateurish. And frankly, its denial speaking.

Of course Gandhi is not the only man responsible for India's freedom. There is a looong list of others who played their roles which ultimately lead to it. Gandhi was however the only person who brought India together as ONE country against the British. Nobody else was able to do that and without that independence would have taken much longer. There was no united voice against the British because there was no ONE India prior to independence (even now, its a very divided country). Every other approach in the book had been tried however the forces trying them never had mass backing like Gandhi did. And that is what made a difference. And that is why he's considered as the Father of the nation, he was the only guy who could bring it all together. And as far as his flaws go, he was only human. And the first one to admit it. Read some of his works with an open mind and you'll know.

And revisionists may try, I don't think his legacy can ever be altered. Prime proof is this commercial and I still think its an awesome one.

Hey BL,

I don't claim that Gandhi's legacy can be altered or that what he did do for India was not important. My whole point is that Indians have a right to know both the Positive "and" the Negative aspects of our History and our Leaders and learn from their mistakes. This debate started out with whether Gandhi's actions during partition were justifiable or not. Thanks to the intolerance and uncouth behaviour of one of our members, the original questions is lost among a war of words. ;)

Denying that Our Leaders had faults or that they ever made mistakes is what I call "Living in Denial" :D

By the way, are you still in TO?

DT
