Wow - i had to respond after reading Manjeet's comments about the "scourge" of the US - mexicans! Ha - after living in Texas for 10 years the mexicans are the REASON that Texas has any freakin culture beyond cowboys/barbeque/beer! Why the heck do you think your indian groceries are so dirt cheap there! Immigrants my friend-from all those unsavory low class chinese/taiwanese/hispanic population! They bring life to an otherwise homogeneous landscape - but if that's your dig...whatever.

I was born (NYC) and brought up in the U.S. (Texas/Boston/Pittsburgh) and feel like our recent move to Toronto was a godsend. More often than not, if you want money at the expense of your conscience you belong in the U.S. While I'm not judging those who do, I'm just stating my observations in my thirty years there. I truly enjoy the more socialist setting of Canada and their general passive stance on global meddling. Plus, I find that the overall general population in Canada keeps abreast of global issues, are kinder and less aggressive! Customer service is excellent, the education system is MUCH better at the undergrad level, crime and racism are markedly lower and people don't assume that I'm a terrorist because I'm brown (although it did help that I'm a female with a bad texas accent :). Grad school, of course, rocks in the US due to tons and tons of funding.

At this point, both my husband (who is from India) and I (who incidentally are both doctorates in engineering) would prefer to bring our children up in the multiculural mosaic that is Toronto. Yeah - so it's cold - they sell great winter jackets up here. Big deal :)

In the end - it's not where you live - but what you can accomplish for the betterment of your family and community using the resources that you have at your disposal.

Our perceptions are guided by our experiences. I said what I saw, felt and experienced. And I don't need anyone else's approval for same. I can't talk about Texan culture or New Foundland culture (if they have any) because I've never lived there. Mexicans bring a lot of other things with the culture which are surely unwanted. And yes, they contribute to the economy and thats the reason they are there. I don't have anything against Mexicans or any other race, its totally about my not liking a the place I am in. I don't want to be a part of the crowd thats in majority here.

My perception might be totally different than any other person for the simple fact that people have different experiences, they have different expectations from life, different definition of success. Like someone in this forum posted that his idea of entertainment was going to the malls on weekends, it did crack me up for a while, but then, he is a different person.

Apart from the perception, there are facts that cannot be denied. The facts like Indians don't paint a very good picture of themselves here in canada or the immigration system of Canada which is too screwed up or the fact that racism is prevalent here or the fact that the job market sucks bigtime. For some people even these facts might not be a matter of concern, but for me it is and thats the reason I'm writing in this forum.

This is true.
Go where you can get work :).

All the goodness in a culture/country/group of people means nothing if you cannot get proper employment.
