Hi Senior Desis
I'm shopping for a 2nd hand car. I see this particular make and model readily available and going cheap. The car is Pontiac Sunfire (model 96 - 98) and are going for anywhere between 2500 to 3500 cad. A similar budget will only give you pre-93 japanese models i.e. honda or toyota. Would appreciate anyone owning a sunfire giving some pointers on this.
Thanks in advance
ER

Well, number of post makes a person senior on CD be open to take advice from a junior too
My observation in North America is that American Cars are less expensive to maintain compare to Japanese Car. When you buy a old Car this factor is a major consideration.
For you to check in a Car is:
1) Car History available at $20 to find out owner and loan on Car
2) Km on engine. Normaly a car like 96 - 98 model used as a family car would have not more than 150000 Km. Engine life is around 500000 Km
3) Look for the tire conditions
4) Look for the manufacturer stickers (information on engine oil, tire press etc) under the hood and trunk. That will tell you if car was involved in major accidents
5) Look underneath of engine for oil leakage, if any pressure line is leaking, than try not touching that car.
4) At ignition on, turn the steering wheel and listen to steering pump sound. If it is a continous humming, it is a sign of healthy system
6) Check Transmission oil, it should be clean without any particle being felt when rubbed between finger and thumb
7) Japanese Car, get timming belt checked
8) Check for the smoke, at starting there should not be any smoke otherwise Car requires spark plug change
My personal opinion is to buy a American Car compare to a Japanese Car for the engine power and space inside car. But American cars are heavy on fuel. If you are not going to use it on express way then be prepared to spend more on gas compare to Japanese Car. Sunfire seems to be a more or less American answer to Japanese Car. Try to search for Buick or Oldmobile. They are good at this price. Recently in classified on CD there was Buick listed.

I need a car for about 2 months from start of 2010.
Better to buy an old one and resell or rent?

A web site on 'carlease' have yielded no response to my many e mails sent to the posted addresses; even the phone numbers on that responds 'wrong numbers' when called.

IMO if ur ok spending 3500 then go with 97 or 98 Honda civic or Toyota corolla...they have a better resale value and wunt give u lots of problems..

I'm selling my 94 Nissan Altima. 206,000 KM. Regularly serviced and oil changed. I have all service records for last 5 - 6 years. Car drives nicely without any issues or problem. I have also replaced the battery about a month ago. I bought a new car that's why i'm selling this one. Expecting about $999. If interested PM me here.
