On a vaguely related note, if you haven't already, read this article by Bill Joy. Its old and quite long, but I find it very relevant. Let me know what you think.

theory. Whay create robots when we can be improved on ourselves? Another major factor that would accelerate the process would be the ruthless ambitions of countries like China (if they are not stupid enough to get into a war over Taiwan) and India (if there is no war with Pak) to seal military and economic superiority on the way to their super power status. I think that China especially will invest a lot more into military spending and making a perfect soldier/weapon. Most of the technology we use today is due to military research and such technology will ultimately be adapted to mainstream usage (as it has been in the past). I think that the economic progress that these countries are making are far ahead of social awareness and this is frightening. Even in the west where there is more social awareness amongst the common man, the challenges and implications in implementing such technology is huge . The controversy about genetic engineering/cloning may give us an insight into how things are going to be shaped. Imagine a country like China with the technological wherewithal. I somehow dont think there's going to be much public debate there! Its going to be technology run amuck. Head for the Hills!!-----------------------------------------------------------------

Sorry, dude. I kinda missed your reply here. I know we're going way off-topic, but what the hell!
What's frightening, I find, is not the advance in technology itself, but the blistering pace. Progress in Nanotech, computational power, genetic engineering, robotics and AI etc etc.. is so rapid these days, I wonder if social consciousness (even in supposedly first world countries) can keep up. And the convergence point of all these technologies seems obvious, the man-machine fusion, in whatever form it may come. One can only hope that all this will be put to good use. I just hope people put their ridiculous "my God better than your God" issues aside and start focusing on how to use these technologies to eradicate poverty, hunger and disease. And once that's taken care of, everbody should start working on space exploration. I hope to at least travel our solar system in my life-time.
Wishful thinking, but like you correctly said, what are we without hope?
Btw, Can't wait to check out Matrix-Revolutions on Wednesday when it comes out.

I'm waiting to see what the Wachowski's have got in store for us next.
I should say that I liked the first part better. The second seemed like an orgy of violence and fx. A little tough on my sensibilities. This from someone whose bread and butter comes from the fx industry.
Inter planetary travel? I think we are a long ways away. Considering that , we may live to be 300 yrs...yes it may happen in our lifetime :-)

Okay... I may not be an expert on this field, in fact I am not an expert in any field for that matter. I am getting rather tired of watching people taking one topic and debating it to the extreme level by involving all types of other scenarios like the man-machine fusion setting. I am not saying that it’s not extremely intriguing; it is however making me confused. We tend to get lost in most discussions and the same thing is happening here. It would be better if we could just stay in track.
Since that is taken care off, here is my not so expert opinion on the topic. I am not against same sex marriage. The topic of this debate is whether one supports or disapproves of same-sex marriage not whether you think, “all gay people should burn in hell!” We are way beyond that. One of the biggest monotheistic arguments against same-sex marriage is the story of Adam and Eve as they were the first two people on the planet and they were especially made for each other. They found each other after years of wandering, after which they got married… or did they? I never remember anyone telling me about the marriage ceremony of Adam and Eve. So what is so sacred about marriage? Why do people believe that marriage is such a strong part of monotheist religions? According to religious laws, Adam and Eve should be burning in hell right now. Right?

. Just so that I know...who is the 'we' that you are talking about? The last time I checked 'we' would include all the people who are at various degrees of understanding and opinions on the topic. That would include all the people who have posted so far...including yourself. Unless there is another 'we' that you refer to.
. However, in a debate such as this people can be expected to come in at any level of the argument. Also, since we were at the risk of flogging a dead horse, we sort of drifted away from the main topic with the man-machine fusion thingy...just letting you know.-----------------------------------------------------------------

Guilty as charged. I was off topic and even pointed that out in my last post. If you read the whole thread though, there is a link leading up to the Matrix, however thin.
Call me crazy, but I have some serious doubts about the Adam and Eve theory for the origin of life on the planet. I also have some issues with the heaven and hell theories that permeate almost every religion, whether monotheist or not. In a universe filled with mind-boggling complexity everywhere you look, these black and white explanations seem to me hyper-simplifications designed to pour cold water over questions, kind of like telling a 5 yr. old "It came from heaven, dear" when he asks you where his new-born sibling came from.
Am I swaying off-topic again? Probably, but the point I'm trying to make is I for one would not use the Adam and Eve argument to justify my stand against same-sex marriages.
