For federal elections, my wife was inclined to vote Justin Trudeau and I was neutral till this morning when we watched a press briefing of all 3 leaders on Bill C-24. For those who are not aware of Bill C-24, it was passed by Stephen Harper govt recently where the persons having dual citizenship and involved in serious crimes like terrorism, can be stripped of their Canadian citizenship and deported back to their home country. In the recent news briefing, the persons involved in terrorist activities are given 60 days’ notice to ask them why their citizenship not be stripped off. In today’s press briefing, Tom Mulcair and Justin Trudeau expressed that they will take back this bill. After listening to them, my wife has changed her mind and she said that she is with Stephen Harper. We should be tough on persons who are involved such activities.

What is the opinion of other CDs?

The Government has already moved to revoke citizenship of a few convicted individuals.

Public safety is paramount. Hence, it is a good move by this Government to keep Canadians safe.

May be it gives a false sense of security by offloading people back to their home country. You can do this only to people with dual citizenship. If the individual has only Canadian citizenship, citizenship cannot be revoked since the person would be rendered stateless. Also revocation is decided by minister in the government and not by a judge in court.

Not really sure what Canadian government can do if the person charged revokes their other citizenship in the 60 days' notice period.

Their (Trudeau & Mulcair )talks and Stephen Harper's action show on which side of global terrorism they are on ...

Stephen Harper has been acting strongly against it ( despite knowing the loss in vote bank) and both of them have been criticizing his actions.

3 cheers for Stephen Harper if you want Canada to work against global terrorism esp the Islamic one which threatens complete world's peace and all responsible countries should step up against it ...

I would be very careful before jumping in to cheer Stephen Harper for bill C-24. On the face of it looks very encouraging - but " the devil is in the detail ".

1. Why has the authority been conferred on the immigration minister and not a competent judge?
2. Is it applicable only to dual citizens? How about citizens of India/Pakistan if they are involved in terrorism cases? I wonder how many middle east countries has dual citizenship agreement with Canada - currently the most reported sources of terrorism.
3. Is the revocation before conviction or after conviction? - the newspapers say it is AFTER conviction - which is fair, however I have my doubts.
4. What are the checks and balances to make sure that this law is not misused for political gains?

But I do notice that NDP and Liberals are trying to project Harper and the conservatives as anti-muslim - which is back firing on them. Wish they could bring some solid & real opposition.

I am personally neutral on this since I have not studied this law carefully.

While the modalities can be questioned and ironed out , the basic difference between Stephen Harper on one side and Justin Trudeau and Tom Mulcair on the other side is

a. Stephen Harper proposes to remove people involved in terrorism out of Canada ( where ever possible )

b. Tom Mulcair & Justin Trudeau are against this and claim no such deportation should be provisioned .

The basic point being whether some kind of a deterrent and punishment be raised to people who are living in Canada and engage in terrorism OR NOT ?

I fail to see why Trudeau and Mulcair are against this altogether and propose no deterrence , except acting as sympathizers to the terrorists (read Islamic ones) and hoping to get their votes .

And this has also been the case throughout in the war against ISIL as well .. Mulcair has opposed and questioned every action taken by the Conservatives in actions against ISIL ... Trudeau had proposed in his naive way to provide humanitarian aid in ISIL affected areas in stead of an armed support until some one remarked.

'If we do that we would be throwing relief packages on dead bodies'

Lol !
You guys are taking it to the extreme. Bill C 24 is just one bill that can affect our lifes. We are talking about the probalibity of like one in a million. People like Khader, who are Canadian citizens, will not be affected by this.
How about more controversial aspects like :

1. Immigrants who smuggle drugs will be stripped of their citizenships and sent back to their own country.

2. Immigrants who kill their spouse and are convicted will be stripped of their citizenships and sent back to their own country.

3. Immigrants who do childporn and are convicted will be stripped of their citizenships and sent back to their own country.

The list can go on...

Wish Adam was here to respond to this.
