Not sure if it is otherwise but as far as I have seen, no one slogs here these days (People in IT , esp. the new joined people may slog as they may have to stick to US deadlines).

In Govt. no need to tell how people enjoy.

In private sector, people come late, chat a lot, have 2 or 3 tea breaks, have a big lunch break and leave around 6 pm. Of course, sharing of family stories is a must in the office. Now with FB and Whatsapp, people spend 1 hour atleast on it.

I am in Cochin and hence life is laid back here. Little bit low salary but then again very low cost of living. I am yet to know of the true situation in Mumbai or Delhi.

Mumbai or Delhi , half your life will be stuck in traffic & pollution & with that comes road rage.

It almost impossible to get on trains or buses in Mumbai or Delhi during rush hour.

Mumbai if you don't fall off the local train , you are lucky.

Taxi Drivers & Auto Rickshaw drivers are rude , arrogant & won't come for short distances & will often overcharge you or won't give back change :(

Real Estate prices are ridiculous..tiny apartments in old dilapidated buildings will go for crores of rupees :(

Only if you are upper middle class or rich & have connections , you will have a reasonable life in these cities, otherwise forget it .

Absolutely we might keep on try searching our past there and find that new layers have come on top of that past. But still some constant things would still be there like relatives , cousins , places ,customs, festivals and the like.

In the end it's your choice and you are lucky you have one .Most don't. If you value being amongst your root & culture , you would overcome the vagaries that come along with.

Likewise for those who value their life abroad , should be able to overcome their pangs of nostalgia and home country.

Agree, India is witnessing the biggest boom of its independent history (or probably 800yrs past, prior to which it had the largest GDP in the world).
There are problems everywhere. Canada has stress related issues, the chicken you consume may be slaughtered 10yrs ago, medical aid is horrible if you need attention & its not an emergency, kids aren't in your guidance in schools, you end up living a life of a helpless Indian in a foreign country..

Of all the people I know, none of them have/had any troubles with their kids here. Their kids grew up here being respectful of the elders and pretty educated, independent, and happy. Kids upbringing has nothing to do with the country, but the family they belong to. There are no stress issues if one has a decent job and living within the means. Old and New chicken don't matter to the ones that are vegetarians (most of the Indians are, for that matter). Last, but not the least people are not living in as much misery here and not as helpless as you project them to be. May be during initial 1-2 years. May be, I only have interacted with the happy people and relatives during my 10 years in Canada.

I completely agree on the Medical Aid though. It literally sucks, honestly.

This doesn't take away from the fact that India is indeed growing (questionable as to what do you mean growth, as the other major issues still persist) and have decent/well-paid jobs for the educated/highly skilled ones.

I am leaving for India this coming week. I packed most of the stuff myself and a few bits and bobs were packed by the mover. The actual costing will be given to me once the goods are palletized after which he will give me the bill of lading, though I do have a rough estimate for 7cubic meters.

I have been given the option to pay for ocean freight here and then do custom clearance myself in India or pay a sum total here and the goods will be sent to my door in delhi. I have also been informed that I will need to come to pay to the customs in Delhi if there is any duty that I needs to be paid (though I do not have any electronic items with me).

In my earlier conversations I had been suggested that- Pre-paid bill of lading is usually cheaper if the freight agent is from source.-

1. Is freight agent the person who will be clearing the freight for us in Delhi and sending it to our residence ?

2. What does pre-paid bill of lading mean- (does it mean paying the whole bill in Toronto)?

If we use the shipping agencies custom clearance man in Delhi then we will have to pay additional 500 US dollars which includes DTHC charges-
USD30/wm
USD170/BL
CIC USD 8 R/T
(subject to 14 % for service tax on total amount)

There was no mention of destination document charges in Delhi. I was told that, if I pay the shipping charges and the 500 US dollars for clearance in Delhi then I will not have to pay anything else and it includes everything. Do you think I should get this in writing from the shipping agent here?

Could you please share your thoughts on this.

Thanking you profusely again for your guidance,

bm14

I sent it a container in 2011. I was against sending it but I was forced to. What I opted for was only ocean freight.
Once the freight reaches India, you will get a call from the clearing agent. He would have bribed the govt. and got your contact details. In this, he called me and asked me 70K to clear it (The actual cost of my container was only around 1.5 lakhs). I refused to clear it. I sent it to a small port of Tuticorin. The agent told me that If I had sent it to cochin or chennai or mumbai, the cost would have been much lesser.
Again, due to the pressure of my brother, I was asked take delivery. So I paid 70K. The customs agent took me and told some lies to the officer (from customs) that I was a male nurse from Kuwait. The customs officer saw me. After that both the customs agent and the agent talked something (the agent was a powerful man in Tuticorin, doing fish export and the like).
So they took delivery and loaded it onto a truck for delivery in Kerala. The total cost was Rs. 8000 for delivery (be be paid to the truck delivery). The customs in Kerala caught the truck and they asked me to pay duty of 30%. I refused. I threatened to go to the Canadian embassy and not take delivery of the materials. I called the agent. The agent said that there was no need to pay additional tax. The kerala customs let me in without any need for money. So it was one.

In your case it will be similar. Once it lands in Mumbai, they will call you. The customs will call you but before that some agent will call you. Either make a deal with them or if you have 1 or 2 days free, you can directly deal with the customs. However, you will need an agent as they will need to fill up some form so that it can be delivered into to Delhi. Only agents can do that (as they have knowledge). There is some on line form also to be filled.

Trust this is clear.
