Apart from glasses for reading, ophthalmologist can check whether there is early onset of cataract.

Some people get the cataract problem in middle age itself and unlike the 1960s and 70s when people wait for the problem to "ripe" before conducting surgery, nowadays it can be done in the initial stages itself. The advantage is when people have to do surgery in their 60s, there may be onset of BP, sugar problems also, which can be avoided when done in the initial stages itself.

There are packages from around Rs.25,000 to 60,000 and may be even more in Chennai (as of Oct'13).

There are good eye hospitals in places like Trichy, Madurai etc apart from Chennai.

Even though one can directly walk into a good hospital for cataract surgery, better to have a consultant outside before, during and after the surgery for supervision. A few 1000s more, will ensure less pain and better eyesight for a lifetime, as discovered from personal experience.
