This article from Rolling stone is a must-read for all those people who have starry-eyed dreams of moving to the land of honey and milk and living happily for ever.

Not a big deal .... it is fact of life.
like sad things happen to individuals .... same applies to cities, states and countries. Nothing is permanent ...
Anyone who believes Camden, NJ (or for that matter, Detroit, MI or Gary, IN) is what the USA is all about is an ignorant fool.
On the same breath, anyone who believes the glamor and glitz of Hollywood, Beverly Hills (and the likes) is what the USA is all about is an ignorant fool as well.
I agree with Gurram. Ups and downs are a natural part of any society. Lake Erie along Cleveland was once on fire...yes, the water was on fire !! because of pollution. Pittsburgh used to be a polluted city beyond belief. You don't see that anymore.
Check out the downtown areas of Minneapolis and Indianapolis. They are clean, safe and vibrant. Even older, below average neighborhoods in Indianapolis are safe and clean.
I think, it's a fashion around the world to hate USA, but paradoxically one will find the most crowd outside the US consulates with people vying to go to the USA. Perhaps, it would be a great test to take articles similar to the one on Rolling Stone to those people braving the weather outside the consulate compounds and see how many would turn around and go home.
In any case, I hope such articles are written to motivate the affected community to clean up and better themselves.

The cowards never started,
The weak died on the way,
Only the strong arrived.
