The Oscars and Grammies are free live telecast and to watch IFFA you have to pay 
yes this sucks. IPL finals and Cricket world cup was Pay per view.
that is the reason for not spreading the word and culture as much as we could have done.
Wimbledon, US Open, Golf, Olympics all are free. but not Indian channels.

It all follows a simple supply and demand curve. How many North Americans would watch IIFA/IPL? Compared that to number of North Americans watching Oscars/Grammy/Emmy/Tony awards as well as other sports shows.
All those events are "free" because studios get money through advertising revenues. Also, it can be considered free only if you don't have a digital box/satellite. Otherwise, you are still paying for the box.

In that case you should blame the Britishers for not spreading the cricketing culture in Canada
I don't think an average Canadian gives a damn about IIFA or IPL
