If one is not from software background and a new immigrant [ more than 3 years] with not much experience on hand in any specific field. Have been to the regular college in India, and communication in English is alright. Not living in a big city either where job options seem plenty.

What kind of jobs would be good options other than working in a Indian grocery store?

You must be kidding.

The people with experience have no value for their experience. Guess the grocery job is the best for all.

Doubt if there is any 'right' answer to such a generic query.... All will depend on the personality, will power, flexibility, adaptability and ofcourse some luck...

People struggle to get jobs in India - even some coming out of the top notch colleges... That is accepted as part of life... Shouldn't one be open to such a struggle when migrating over to a new world and new culture? Why do some migrate with the expectation that a job must be handed over to them the moment they land? (I am not referring to any particular post here - but had a recent discussion on this with a new immigrant.. so kind of continuing to vent off).

To the OP... home based business (if there is an aptitude and right skills) is an option... from Indian grocery store, you can move to a big chain store, then climb up the ladder. One thing good about in this country is that you abilities are appreciated. No one keeps looking back at your 10th mark and 12th mark to see if you are fit even after 20 yrs experience!

Actually, I was not complaining about the immigration. I understand that it’s a new world altogether with new land, diverse cultures, different language, dissimilar outlook etc.

If you could throw in some + and - of the following job options, it would broaden my view to reconsider these works. There seems to be few options:

- Truck [CDL] driving including school buses
-customer services like call center job
-warehouse work but need some forklift experiences
-Auto part delivery driver
- dish washers or kitchen help
- Medical support [personal Aids]
- Taxi operation but need some info about shifts and insurance
-Security guards
- Fast food joints

Home based business is another option but one needs some capital to start the business besides precise aptitude and right skills.

Try to get into some technical/semi-technical job as such jobs are well paying than non-technical jobs. For example, most of the telecom companies need technician to install/service/test equipments. Such types of jobs need very little technical knowledge and there are short term courses available.

It’s a good idea to get some skill or training to be paid a better wage than minimal. There are many instt/org/school to offer tehnical certificates, but one needs to know what certificate to get. I came across one IT Training school asking for $4000 for simple preparation for a computer's A+ test.

I have seen job openings on various job boards for Dish antenna installer, security system installer etc. I really don’t know much about telecom industry, but it seems like a wide variety of jobs are required in that category.

Is it good to have a CompTIA A+ certification in computer field? Hope that field is not flooded with local technicians with many certificates.

Also, what about the installation and services to data/voice/video devices? What kind of certificates/training are required for this and from where to get it at reasonable fee. Is it possible to get the certificate Online?
