Hi everyone,

I have been not sleeping for couple of days trying to take a decision whether to move to Canada or not.

I am working in the Gulf in the IT field (networking and systems administration) and have a stable Job with good salary, however, I must move this year to Canada or I will loss my PR status.

Here are my questions, I hope you would give me an advice on them:
1) Are native Canadians hospitable people towards immigrant?
2) All my work experience is in the Gulf, so is getting an IT job in Canada in that field possible within the first 3 months?
3) Does "Canadian experience" apply to IT (since it's identical everywhere!).

I really do not want to loss my current job but at the same time I do not want to loss Canada .

My experiences -
1. Native canadians (and Canadians in General) are very friendly. Just treat them as you'd like to be treated. Smile often and you'd be welcomed.

2. I was in DXB for many years and did land a job quite soon in Canada. Within 3 months .... depends on your social networking, soft skills and whether you have routine data / systems networking or you hold current niche skills in networking. I am from a similar (not the same) background.

3. IT experience is transferrable anywhere. Hopefully you have some solid experience in niche technologies.

Suggestion - Don't lose your PR.

Never mind my earlier reply.

Canada is a great country for living. But keep it in mind that it can take several months or more to get a job .... If you are ready for that (mentally and financially) ..... then go for it and have a good sleep now.

Moving to Canada is a personal decision, however the following factors will enable you to make a decision.

1. If you are in your late 20s or mid 30s, it is the right time to move to Canada. You will be able to integrate into their society easily. Generally Canadians are very friendly and easy going people, so nothing to worry on that count.

2. If you have young children, it is better to move, you will get good free education, good atmosphere and good future for them.

3. Since you are professionally qualified and in the IT line, you will be able to get an IT job in 3 to 4 months, but you will have to be prepared to initially struggle and it will usually take one or two years with the so called Canadian experience for you to get a good and stable job with all the perks as per your aspirations and to your liking.

4. Please note that you will not be able to save money as you have been doing in the Gulf, as tax is levied on everything and hence do not plan to retire early. If you are willing to work hard and continue to work till your are 65 years, you can retire with a good pension.

5. Other perks you will miss in Canada is a full time maid, cheap petrol, free medicines, moderate weather etc. etc.

6. If you plan to leave the Gulf and move to Canada, I suggest it should be whole heartedly and a permanent move with the sole aim of being successful in Canada, because if you move without resigning your job in the Gulf, thinking you will come back after six months, you will neither have happiness and satisfaction in Canada thinking of your good and easy life in the Gulf nor you will be able to return back to Gulf, it is like sailing in two boats with one leg in each boat.

Thank you all for your prompt response, however, I still have couple of questions:

1- Is the medication (including operations) fully covered for all Canadian citizens and PR holders?

2- What benefits would the Canadian government provide me when I retire (above 60)?

3- How many months the unemployment allowance last? is it limited or till you find a job in your field?

4- If I have the cash to buy a house, is it recommended to buy it right away or it's better to take a mortgage from the bank and keep the cash for making side business?
