These rates are in addition to the HST that we will be paying on electricity come July. HST is also going to impact the price of food and other stuff.
Regarding your sarcasm, I think life is a b***h, no matter where you go. You win something, you lose something.
The people that will feel the most impact are the new immigrants and people living barely above poverty line. This will also impact the amount that people save every month, unless your employer is generous enough to give you a rise equivalent to increase in cost of living.

Cons:
1. Higher taxes (as you noted)
Pros:
1. Health care geared to need, not income.
2. Generally cleaner cities.
3. Not having to worry about getting shot in the street (outside of Toronto, that is).
4. Far superior public schools.
And the most important one:
5. Real beer (not the yellow swill made from corn syrup that Americans have to drink).
