Conmen steal 8 SUVs from Bryan Adams film shoot

DANKUNI: It was a con job worthy of a Bollywood potboiler. A gang whisked off as many as eight SUVs, posing as crew members of a film shoot starring none other than singer Bryan Adams, in Dankuni on Monday evening.
It was last week that a popular Hindi daily published an advertisement, saying a few Bollywood and Hollywood stars including the Grammy-winning singer would visit Hooghly soon to shoot a movie. The advertisers sought to hire a few airconditioned cars in top condition to ferry the crew. The date for a walk-in interview was fixed on Friday at a private lodge in Dankuni.
A total of 25 car owners responded to the advertisement. After a preliminary interview, 10 cars were shortlisted. The gang of goons used these cars for the past three days. On Monday, two of the shortlisted cars were sent to the airport, ostensibly to receive some foreign guests.
The two drivers went to the airport and waited there for hours, but no one turned up. When they returned to the lodge, they found the other eight drivers lying unconscious, with the SUVs five Scorpios and three Boleros nowhere to be found.
The two drivers revived the others and lodged a complaint with Dankuni police. The gang apparently drugged the drivers and fled with the cars. We received a complaint in the evening after the two drivers returned from the airport. We are not sure when the miscreants actually fled with the cars, said a senior officer.
According to the complaint lodged by the car owners, the leader of the gang had identified himself as Ajoy Gupta. It was he who had conducted the interview and selected the 10 cars.
It seems that an organised gang is involved. An investigation is on, said Hooghly superintendent of police Satyajit Bandyopadhay.
