Hi All,
I am mechanical engineer with 10+years exp in IT (programming , software analysis,Architecture and Project management).
Have another year to go before i get my Citzenship but wanted to have my education evaluations and all done to be ready if i ever decide to apply for TN visa.
I have the following questions
1> What category can i apply
2> What kind of education equivalency should i look
3> how and where can i get the education evaluation done.

Either Computer Systems Analyst or Management Consultant category. Both these categories are highly scrutinized.

An undergraduate degree would suffice. But just because your degree is non IT, make sure you have plenty of evidence in the form of experience letters from the previous employers to prove that you have worked in IT. Stay miles away from the word 'Programming', both verbally while you are in there being interviewed and in your experience letters.

I never had to do this because I graduated from a US university. But you can get the evaluation done in University of Toronto.
Both my undergraduate and masters are in Mechanical Engineering. They do give me a hard time when I go for a renewal. If this happens, tell them you need to speak to the supervisor. My experience says they do know a little better than the rookies who we usually face while crossing the border.
The key is a strong offer letter. They look for some specific things:
1. The letter should be addressed to CBP (Customs and Border Patrol)
2. Salary should be mentioned.
3. The letter should say it is a temporary requirement (For three years or shorter time period) and Canadian citizen will move back to Canada once his/her services are terminted.
It's a good idea to put in the job responsibilities in the offer letter. They once asked me what will be my responsibilities as a Systems Analyst and matched them to what they had in their manual.
