Hi,

I know, while entering Canada as new immigrant one can declare 'Goods to Follow' list and bring the items later. I am returning Canada after my 4 years of job in China. Can I get this opportunity (of declaring goods to follow).

I am a Canadian citizen and have not used this when I first landed in Canada.

If you did make one and have the list with you and all of the items that you are bringing here from China are still stored there for shipping to Canada and you have the bills and amounts paid to the storage people available, then it is a genuine case that merits a permit for importation.

I have said this on a lot of occasions, if you can SELL or even give away the same where ever it currently IS and then fold the same and carry it in your pocket, then the same could be purchased here in Canada after you settle down. Because the cost of transporting and the insurance and the hassles of clearing, moving and setting up etc., can surely be avoided and you can pick the same item Brand Spanking New and the current model too and eliminate the voltage converter, spare parts availability and all of the pains and headaches too associated with the move.

Surely there are other expensive and sentimental items that you want to have and those are the items that merit as items to follow and worth the expense. Not the other items that uses a container and also a voltage converter.

Hey, the choice is always yours, What happens if the items shipped are stolen or damaged in transit or gutted in a warehouse and by fire and the Insurance company says I will order an identical item from China? Will you say please pay me and I will buy one right here!! And if it cannot be replaced, what then?

Freddie.

You cannot use this priviledge any more.
First of all, the list MUST be prepared and stamped by Canada customs during the landing process.
Secondly, you are now a Canadian citizen and no longer a PR.
Which means you have already fulfilled the residency requirements to be a citizen.
You have been working abroad as a Canadian citizen and not a PR.
I don't see any way that the Good to Follow list rule can apply to you.

When you shift your residence back to Canada, there are a lot of privileges that you can cash, that go with it when you return back to Canada. I have not done any research and when I complete I will post it.

The question is DID YOU DECLARE Goods to follow and its value when you landed?

... When you shift your residence back to Canada...

I am half sure, if I fall in this category. In 2006 I joined a contract job in China but kept 'Ties' with Canada (paid taxes etc); but maintained a ‘home away from home’ for 4 years. I kept on visiting my home country during these 4 years. Now I will be landing back in about 3-4 weeks. I know there are several 'names' given in these circumstances- Non Resident Canadians etc. depending upon many factors.

I wish to declare 'Goods to Follow' if can do that. I intend to bring my all personal stuff from China to Canada sometime later. Will also appreciate; plz post other benefits, I am entitled to; when you find them.

Ben

You are a Canadian Citizen NOW.

You are a returning resident if you have lived abroad continuously for an year or more.
You have an Exemption of $10,000.00

Here is something that will give some information.

If you have lived there for more than One Year. If you had those items in your possession or in use for more than Six Months. It is waived if you have been living there for Five Years or More. See Replacement Goods also.

Please contact and verify with CBSA, if you are in doubt at any time.

the rules seem to say:

1. If you have lived outside of Canada for less than five years:
a) The goods should have been owned, possessed and used (ALL THREE) for a minimum of six months
b) Individual item should be less than $10k. Togather, your container can be worth 100k or more - that should not matter.

2. If you have lived outside Canada for more than 5 years, condition (a) above does not apply.
