I put in an application to sponsor my mother. FYI My mother stayed in USA for 1 year in 2001 and 1.5 years in 2004-2005 in canada as a result she may require police clearance certs.

Application made in May 2005
Application processing in Delhi started - Oct 2007
Medical done - June 2008
CHC sent us Police clearance request - USA request August 8 2008 to be submitted by Oct 8 2008 to Delhi
They asked for FBI clearance and US State police clearance. mother submitted FBI clearance only because still awaiting US State police clearance.

Visa officer called my mother and asked her why state police clearance not submitted. He said to her on receipt also mail your passport.

1) Can we send the passport on a verbal request or does one receive a formal letter ?
2) After this, Can they also ask us for Canada police clearance?
3) How long do they hold the passport until visa is issued?
4) Is it advisable to travel out of country at this stage of processing ?

You should wait till she receives her State Police Clearance Report and then submit the same, together with the report.

You should also get a RCMP clearance from Canada also. Please do not wait till the last minute for them to ask and that might delay the issue of the Visa.

So, follow their instructions to a 'T'. Also check the documents check list.

Better safe than sorry. Some times the delays caused might trigger a need for second clearance papers, because the first one gets time expired.
