Hi Folks,
I need to travel drive to Virginia, for a day, I have never driven to US in past, can you folks plz guide on some do's -dont's as regards to driving as I am rather too bad at sharp observing, and I definitely do not intend to attract any tickets.

You dont have to take any extra precaution to drive within USA, driving there is as same as Canada. Visting VA for a day would be too much stress for you if you are the only driver for the trip. The driving time to VA is around 8-10 hours alone.

Make sure you follow rules for driving
In US, all speed limits are in MILES
So if you Car dashboard doen't have Miles as well Km indication,
better keep converted figures for both Miles & Km
It really helps
Of course, all roads & highways are better in US than Canada

Of course, that's a wide generalization.
Try cruising down freeways such as I-94, I-75, M-10 or M-39 in metro detroit or I-79 along WV/PA border. It's pot hole galore. VA and OH highways are pretty good though.

If you are going west part to middle of Virginia, try to use I-81 maximum possible, this is very quite road compare to I-95, even if you have to drive 25 to 40 mile more in total I-81 is better.
If you are driving long enough in Canada around Toronto area, to drive in US is easy most of people are driving on cruse control and less lane change (except I-95 on Phila till EWR airport)

Police presence will be a bit more so you should be within the speed limit.
Also be prepared for road tolls (by cash / credit cards) and toll at the border crossings. It will be prudent for you to change and have some US $ currency since at the border crossings it will make sense to us US$. (The crossings can ask US$2.75 or C$ 3.50. So it is better to pay in US$).
Also run on minimal tank so that you can fill up after crossing the border. Gas prices in USA are around 20% cheaper than what it is in Canada. Likewise, fill up the tank before you cross the border.
Update you CAA membership and confirm if it is still valid. So in the case of breakdowns, you call the AAA.
Donot give any lifts to wandering people or even stop to help people on the way esp. during night times.
Take some extra fuses, flashlights,water etc.. for the trip.
Depending upon some cellphone plans, it will be a mistake to use cellphone in US. For eg. I used 20$ prepaid fido card, and the charge is like $3 a minute so beware of it. Use the Cellphone only as a pager.

These days for most borders the rate is the same for both funds. So you could pay $2.75 in either US$ or CD$
Also keep in mind the toll rates differ from one border to another. They also differ from which side you're travelling.
As an eg. crossing from Canada into US at Blue Water Bridge (Sarnia / Port Huron) you pay $2.75 (CND or US funds) But crossing from US to Canada at Blue Water Bridge you can pay either US $1.50 or CD$ 2.00
