With all my current grudge against Amitabh, I still think he can kick Johny Depp's b*** any time. This should be more interesting than Shakti

P.S. - It is not a question of us v/s them

You really have to be smoking some really cheap doobies to even try and compare the two. That's the end of it truthfully...IMO. And you think Bachan can kick Depp's butt?? What the heck are you thinking...assuming you are?

No way jose!

I think the comparision should not even be considered :-)

Reason: Amitabh's range is too limited as a character actor. Even in black he leaned towards overacting/hamming (as is the norm with bollywood leading men). Amitabh is Amitabh be it in Dewaar, Shaan, Sharabhi or Sholay.

Depp on the other hand is versatile, he becomes the character be it Sweeny Todd, Willy Wonka, Edward Scissorhands or Swashbuckling Captain Jack Sparrow.

I can Imagine Depp in *any* of the Bhachans roles but I cannot even begin to imagine BigB as Edward Scissorhands. Of Bollywoods leading men I can think of, **maybe** Kamal Hasan or Amir could portray such subtle vulnerability. Not Amitabh for sure.

Looking at the cast I think the competition may well be between Irfan Kahn and Johny Depp...depending on the material the former is given. Irfan acts with more restraint and subtlety than Amitabh for sure.

I think Depp is hollywoods finest (leading men with range in character roles). Followed by Pitt (Babel), Edward Norton (American History X) and Clooney(Syriana) .

Don't you think your language is too harsh? I am voicing my opinion - and I have as much right as you have to express my views. At least have some respect for other users, and be careful in choosing your words next time.

And remember, I am not some teenager that is in awe of Amitabh. I am making my statement in my full consciousness without any influence of mood-altering substances

I do not care about new Amitabh movies. But we can have a whole discussion about Amitabh's acting range / versatility. It is unfortunate that he got typecast as an "angry young man". But watch movies like "Abhimaan" or "Alaap" or "Saudagar" or "Amar Akbar Anthony" or even smaller cameos in "Jalwa" to see his acting range. He is the only actor that can wear a "Dhoti", smoke a "beedi" and can sing "Yeh Hai Bambai Nagariyaa".

And I would not have even started this thread if Johny Depp was pitted against Kamal Hasan / Shahrukh / Aamir . I don't care for those actors.

As for my choice of Hollywood actors - I prefer Tom Hanks / De Niro / Al Pacino / Jack Nicholson.

Clooney - I am not a big fan but I like his movies - esp Ocean's Eleven, Syriana, Michael Clayton

Pitt - Babel - Yes, one of the really good movies I have seen - although the portion about Japanese girl seems forced.

Edward Norton - Again, not a big fan but like all his movies.

BTW, all ideas expressed above are strictly IMHO

Edward Scissor Hand was my first Depp Movie and after that I saw "What's eating Gilbert Grape" ... Emotions all over - everywhere in those two movies.

I am not sure about any of the bollywood leading men - they all are worried about look, dance & fight. But one name "Mungerilal - Raghubir Yadav" of his early days strikes me.

Amitabh himself called black his finest work so I think he has a long way to go as a character actor. As a bollywood figure I would agree that he is probably unmatched BUT against Johnny Depp? Come on..;)

Fine actors all, but apart from Al Pacino and De Niro, the other two often makes one feel you are watching the actor rather than the character. I'll admit both Hanks and Nicholson do have range. Nicholson in 'Shining' brrrrrr! Yes they are better than Amitabh too. Gene Hackman, Morgan freeman, Denzil washington also are in the same category.

I think one can compare the likes of Clint Eastwood to Amitabh if you really have to. Eastwood would probably have an edge given his recent flicks. 'Unforgiven' is one of my fave's.

Not with Johnny Depp....in a million years. One should not even bother. :)

I only expect Depp to get better with time.

Though debatable but I have found Pacino to be the same in all his movies - Godfather / Scent of .... / Taxi Driver .... / Scarface .... Donnie Brasco ....... hes always Al Pacino and a shade tweaked for the character .

Tom Hanks / Kevin Costner are different altogether and get into the skin of the character .... and yet another one .... Daniel Day Lewis (My Left Foot / Gangs of NY / There ll be blood )

On Indian front nobody comes close to Om Puri / Sanjeev Kumar for their transformtion of characters and yes ... Kamal Hasan ....

Sometimes I feel Al Pacino and Amitabh Bachchan are similar figures in the 02 'woods . :)
