Hi,

My husband has applied for PR as primary applicant in May 08. Since I have a couple of years to receive the PR, I was thinking of doing CGA in the meantime.

I am a CA (India) and CPA (US) and currently in US on L2 visa.

Is it possible to get student visa only for the purpose of CGA as it is a distance learning program and not a full time course. If yes, which province would be the best with respect to the job prospects in future.

I went through the CGA websites but was unclear whether a student visa would be issued for such program.

Thanks a lot for responses.

Please contact (CGA) them by mail or through e-mail. I do not see a requirement that you have to reside in Canada to do the 'distant learning'. You can do it from where ever you are. Impress upon them that you will be migrating to Canada, and hence the study courses towards your future goals. If it helps you to wait till you arrive here, then, there are other areas through which you can obtain the same to enhance your knowledge base. Please see the link provided.

You have to decide upon where you both want to reside and get employed. That will be the Province to apply to get into, for the CGA course also.

Hope this helps a little.

Freddie.

I believe you need to be resident of Canada to apply for CGA. There is another requirement for CGA that you need one year of canadian work experience to qualify to be a CGA.

How to Obtain your CGA Designation in Ontario
To obtain the CGA designation in Ontario :

You must hold an undergraduate university degree from any approved degree granting institution, in any field. If you do not have a university degree, CGA-Canada provides a number of opportunities to complete a degree concurrent with your CGA program of professional studies.
You must successfully complete – as verified by CGA Ontario's Education department – CGA-Canada's program of professional studies, which includes:
independent, online study, including submission of assignments through the Internet
write and pass national examinations
concurrent practical experience – the CGA program is a work-study program, not a program of full time study.
To be eligible to register with CGA Ontario, you have to:
be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant
be a permanent resident of Ontario
be bondable (not have been found guilty of any criminal offences)
CGA Ontario's Student Services Department must present your name to the provincial board of governors at its next scheduled meeting for admission to members. The formal admission to membership ceremony is held annually every fall.
Once admitted to membership, you become a registered member of both the national organization (CGA-Canada) and the local affiliate (CGA Ontario).

Hi Pshhe

One needs to be a canadian resident to be eligible to pursue CGA in Ontario
There are five levels.

Indian CA gets admission to Level 4 as first 3 levels are exempted.
However if one is CPA even level 4 is also exempted and will need to do go only final level.

Cheers!
