There is a trunk release button by the driver seat. Why don't you use that?

Why can you not use both hands and support the trunk door with one hand while opening the lock with another?

Why do you have to put your head in the trunk while the door is still opening and will bounce back? You have been careless and you are worried about safety features.

How did it hurt you? When you release the lock or when the trunk was already open and you had your head inside the trunk to remove stuff and the trunk lid came down? Both are unusual cases but may be you need to check the lubrication and best option will be to approach a Honda dealer with the problem.

Is it just me? Please share.

No, it's not just you.
My suggestion : get rid of that piece of Japanese/Chinese junk made by slaves in sweat shops, and get a decent American car like the Intrepid or Impala.
For the same price (or lower), you will get a much more comfortable car, with ample leg room, ample trunk space and an automatic trunk door.
Your problem solved once and for ever.
