"Conservative Member of Parliament, Deepak Obhrai, is concerned that larger number of South Asian immigrants in Britain are facing loss of employment there due to new immigration rules.
In his position as Parliamentary Secretary to Foreign Affairs Minister, he's asking members of the South Asian community to consider applying to Canada.
In a telephone interview with rediff.com, he said, April 2, "Canada is in need of skilled and qualified immigrants. Their qualifications and experience would be a tremendous asset to Canada. Our economy is expanding and is in need of experienced people. They would make excellent citizens of Canada."
Currently Canada is taking 230,000 new immigrants each year. This number is being increased to 240,000 -- 260,000 from this year.
In its 2006 census report, Census Canada reveals that during 2001-06 Canada's population increased by 5.4 percent, 2/3 of which the result of immigration.
According to their projections, by 2030, 100 percent increase in population would come from immigration.
As Obhrai said, immigration from South Asia is "poised to become the leading source of immigrants to Canada."
So, he suggested to those South Asians in Britain, who are likely to be negatively impacted by their new immigration rules that they should opt to come to Canada."
OK, it is nice to know Deepak Obhrai is wooing potential new immigrants (read future desi voters ) here.
But, it would be nice if he fights for better recognition of foreign degrees that would provide better employment opportunities here. And hope he also fights for cutting down the delays in family immigration.
