Hi all,
I am a landed immigrent here, Just landed couple of weeks back.
I just want to share my beginning experiences with you, and get your suggestions.

As most of the DESIs I am also came here with lots of hopes (on making big money), dreams

on profession, and brutally dissappointed.

Prior to this I was there in US on H1B visa and was doing good(making good money). But

unfortunately, SEPT11 attacks, affected me too lot. Got layed off and went back to home

land.

meanwhile, I got my candian immigration and am here. It is not even a month that I am here,

but luckiely I got my SIN and PR. I am still searching job. But my wife, instead sitting at

home and trying a job, she felt, it is better to do something by going out. She has given

her resume at couple of placement agencies.

Yesterday, she got a call and was offerent a temp. job (factory). Actually, we were not at

all interested in doing such a labor job, but my wife felt, if we work with local people we

will get better exposure to the culture and started going to factory. There she is supposed

to do packaging work. But, as she never did such kind of work, she was struggling and trying

to keep things in place. It is true that she could not do as fast as her team-members. But

this being second day, I feel it is okay.

AT the end of the second day, I literally got shocked by listening my wife experience. Her supervisor is not behaving well. She is saying "Why did you come", "Why can't you do", "Can't you do this silly thing etc". Even in US (though we were not immigrents, just temp workers) we were treated well. Why it is happening like this here.

Is this the regular culture of local people? I know, if it is US, I would have called directly 911. Can we do the same here? Kindly advice.

MY CONCERN IS, IF THEY DON'T LIKE OUR WORK THEY CAN ASK US TO LEAVE ANYMOMENT. WE ARE NOT EVEN A PERM. EMPLOYEE. WHY TO INSULT US BY MAKING STUPPID COMMENTS.

Kindly advice how to proceed.

That seems like harrasment. Its one thng to be told that you are slow on joba nd need to be faster. I was told the same at the warehouse. But using word like "silly" and "why did you come" doesnt seem appropriate.

Since your wife has been in job for a few days only I dont know what can be done.

anybody else?

Dear Friend,

I can understand your situation.

Solution.Refuse to accept the treatment.Give the supervisor a piece of your mind, and be prepared to leave. May be he/she learns to treat you with respect and things get better.Or you quit and find a better job .

At times the job is not worth you.I know refusal is difficult, because it leaves a vaccum-both financial and professional. But bear in mind life is not some one elses game in which you are a mere pawn. Its your game and you are the king. You got to plan, defend yourself and fight.Don't let anyone hurt the 'you' inside of you.Its far more precious to be allowed to be hurt by anyone.

As for me, I am not just preaching.Have done it couple of times myself both in India and abroad. And trust me apart from a temporary vaccum,I have emerged the overall winner in the long run.

But then who said happines and success were easy.May be its the next bend.

Regards

Any advice would have to be tempered by the realities of your situation. Though tough to take, this situation can also be an opportunity to improve ones management skills. Is it possible to talk to the supervisor without being confrontational? Keep a calm but firm tone and hold your ground with dignity.
e.g:
Why did you come?
Ans: Can you please explain what you mean by that statement?

Can't you do this silly thing?
Ans: I'm sure you may consider it silly but its new to me.

Also try to follow on these with. 'Can you please tell me how to do things better?' or 'please explain how the things can be done better ' etc. Try not to close the exchange in a confrontational tone as much as possible. Maybe even try to meet the supervisor alone to discuss what can be done to improve performance(even though the performance may not be an issue). Most bullies are not comfortable with such situations.

Now all this said and done. Based on what you are telling me, the problem seems to be that the supervisor is lacking management skills and should not be supervising people. OR having a really bad few days. So know that it is not your fault. Unfortunately your wife has to step up to the plate and 'manage' her 'manager'.

All locals are not like that nor do they treat you as you described. The only reason this supervisor would continue to treat you that way is if you let them.
I also acknowledge that all this is 'Easier said than done'.

Thats a simple!!
GO to manager n complain OR
GO to HR and report the "verbal abuse"
They will defenately kick that supervise if not go to ministry of labour!!!

The lady went thru the agency. She should be complaining to the agency. Let's be realistic. There are thousands in GTA who are on the payroll of the agencies. In fact agencies thrive on the newcomers/immigrants. And the employers who hire these agencies know very well that nothing will happen to them. After all this is business and the agencies want to make money.

My suggestion would be to look for some office related jobs. There are plenty of them. Go thru agencies that have office jobs. They pay around $10-12/hr. I am assuming here that both of you know MS office, at least Excel and Word.
