Thank you sir. Well the goods are till Delhi and I have the option of working with the shipping companies custom agent if I prepay, though what that prepay includes the agency as of now is not giving me anything in written and I have to leave in two days!!! I am definitely going to share my experience in detail once I receive my goods in India. It will be very helpful for those who are in the planning stages. Will keep everyone updated!!!

Murali it sounds terrible that the system is so widely corrupt! Recently, I read some news article somewhere that described how 61,000 Indian millionaires left India, hauling their wealth abroad. We also know of nearly two TRILLION US$ in black monies put away by the corrupt politicians, industrialists and military folks from India in various spots in Europe. I invested a whole lot into Indian banking system with plans of returning there soon. It all looks and sounds quite disappointing to think about settling into that corrupt society. Not sure how I may fare with my grand plans. In the worst case scenario, I may return here, which is in itself sounds depressing. What a debacle!!!

Anyways, good luck to the moving guy. Looks like he is gonna need it.

GI,
Corruption is very much less now (except in small places where they get bribe once in a while. At that time they will take the maximum. We can fight but we need to spend some days there and we did not have it).

I am not sure if you will agree, but the whole of India has now a definite price. Say for example, you want to register land. There is a fixed bribe. Say Rs. 10,000 for 13 lakhs worth of land price. Everyone pays it (as they work with stamp duty brokers) and you get the job done in 10 minutes. I recently sole a land to some one (they paid the bribe and not me) and we went to the sub registrar office (in a small town) and we were done in 10 mins. That is the beauty of things.

Same with building approvals. We paid Rs 10 lakhs bribe for a 40 crore worth building for the buildign permit to occupancy certificate.

Same goes with registering a car. It is known as incidental expenses and it is given to you in the form of a quote, when you buy a car.

So, now, no one can say that things are not moving. I wam waiting for more than 2 months for my land to be registered etc... Things happen in the same day but with bribe. People in India are so buy. Land which they bought 10 years back for 1 lakhs is Rs 1 crore these days. So who will not pay 1 or 2 lakhs bribe as incidental expenses.

Railway had eliminated corruption. No more touts selling you train tickets. Slowly change will come.

Murali

We used the above from Mississauga.
We used a LCL and the fee was around $ 1600.
However we told them to port at Tuticorin TN where I had to pay a bribe of Rs 70,000 to take it from the customs though my New stuff was worth just Rs. 1 lakhs (Rexin sofa and some small stuff like pizza oven etc..)

But I heard that if it had been sent to busy ports like chennai or cohcin the bribe would have been less than Rs 20,000

So see the worth of the stuff before bringing it.

I know someone who is in a similar dilemma. They are moving back to India for good.

They have a 3 Bed Room house, plus finished basement, plus living room , family room and kitchen.

They are wondering if its worth shipping their furniture and some small household items to India from Toronto. They are going back to a major Metro in India.

If they try to dispose it off in Canada, they won't get a good price, even though its in very good condition and well kept and maintained. Not much resale value in Canada.

I have been given the option to pay for ocean freight here and then do custom clearance myself in India or pay a sum total here and the goods will be sent to my door in delhi. I have also been informed that I will need to come to pay to the customs in Delhi if there is any duty that I needs to be paid (though I do not have any electronic items with me).

In my earlier conversations I had been suggested that- Pre-paid bill of lading is usually cheaper if the freight agent is from source.-

1. Is freight agent the person who will be clearing the freight for us in Delhi and sending it to our residence ?

2. What does pre-paid bill of lading mean- (does it mean paying the whole bill in Toronto)?

If we use the shipping agencies custom clearance man in Delhi then we will have to pay additional 500 US dollars which includes DTHC charges-
USD30/wm
USD170/BL
CIC USD 8 R/T
(subject to 14 % for service tax on total amount)

There was no mention of destination document charges in Delhi. I was told that, if I pay the shipping charges and the 500 US dollars for clearance in Delhi then I will not have to pay anything else and it includes everything. Do you think I should get this in writing from the shipping agent here?

Could you please share your thoughts on this.

Thanking you profusely again for your guidance,

bm14

Can you update, what the final, all inclusive cost was ? And what you exactly shipped ? Was it worth it or not ?
