Hello Everyone,
I am moving back to Delhi in the summer for family reasons. I am planning to ship- ocean freight all my household goods from Toronto, but am not really sure as to which company to use. I have been online, but then thought that perhaps if I could ask our candiandesi friends who might have used ocean freight, if they could give me some suggestions. I do not have any knowledge or experience in terms of using or dealing with these companies.
Thanking you all in advance,

The process isn't as complicated as it feels.
In fact life in India is a lot better under the new Govt now.

We used the above from Mississauga.
We used a LCL and the fee was around $ 1600.
However we told them to port at Tuticorin TN where I had to pay a bribe of Rs 70,000 to take it from the customs though my New stuff was worth just Rs. 1 lakhs (Rexin sofa and some small stuff like pizza oven etc..)
But I heard that if it had been sent to busy ports like chennai or cohcin the bribe would have been less than Rs 20,000
So see the worth of the stuff before bringing it.

CAD 1600 was reimbursed by the emloyer.
I was not for transporting stuff but one of my family members wanted to do it.
We thought that the port of Tuticorin will ask us only a small bribe as it was a small one but they said that since it was small, they wanted the max. from a consignment.
We also thought of the option of not taking the consignment but then bidding for it at auction (50% lesser cost and no duties) but since the package contained some very sentimental items (then), we paid the bribe.
We found out that the bribe is less in Cochin and Chennai and we could have paid just Rs 20 K there.

Guptaji,
Things are not cheap in India anymore, infact on my numerous visits there canada is much cheaper.. In India I can only vouch for big cities though. 1600 dollars is a lot in canadian dollars but in Indian rupees it is about eighty five thousand. If one goes to buy a decent sofa set in Delhi it is nothing less than 1800 dollars on a lower end. I am not talking designer stuff...So in todays time depending on which city one plans to move to India, actually many things are far cheaper here. Leaving all of that aside, sometimes sentimental value of things far out weigh monetary considerations. Actually electronics is something one must dispose off here, firstly the voltage is different and then one has to take into consideration the chances of breakage and lastly you get the same electronics there too. One has to make a cost analysis that if we sell here what will we get, and then if we buy there how much will we spend. Besides the hassel of going shopping all over again in India, which also means time and resources.
- dhaikin- yes I too have heard that things are rather smooth under the new government. I have actually not come across many people who are unhappy with their decision of moving back. Things have changed a lot, salaries are very good, excellent business prospects, many europeans and american have migrated there and have settled down. Some have also married with the locals there and are raising their families in India itself. I was surprise to find a Korean Newspaper in Gurgaon.... but more on that in another forum.
