When in rome be like a roman but dress like an indian?
Its hard to say where the balance is, but I think if people stop and stare then you should change a little to blend in. After all you wont wear a kurta to work. But people wear kurtas to the temple or social gathering and no one cares.
When goras wear those gothic clothes even then people stop and stare.

Actually I do wear short Cotton Kurtas at work on Fridays - and couple of Gora friends have asked for it.
But here is a thing - I wear what I feel comfortable with. I don;t get more than 4 months to wear my first choice. If someone stares at me because I am wearing Hawaii ... o well, too bad that someone needs to get life.
Next i'll read, don't bring Roti/Sabzi/Indian Food to work for Lunch - Bring Sandwich/Salad ... Blend in. And in the same breath, wants kids to follow Indian Diet.
People should have decent public behavior. Defecating in park lots is not.
Nobody anywhere should do this.
On Kenya, well the Indians like their culture and want to retain it. This is no harm done. Not everybody wants to live in a melting pot culture - that is why we have multiculturalism. The Kenya government has done nothing. Have you heard about Pio Gama Pinto?
And we should eat our foods and speak the language. Did the invaders speak our language when they came and invaded us?
Reading the issue of clothes - we should be able to wear Kurta etc as long it's balanced and in the right context.
When in Rome, try to maintain a balance. That should be the new approach. Not dress like SWAT valley, but more like Turkey.

I am not trying to defend such attacks against Indians in foreign countries. But let’s practice before we preach.
Before pointing fingers at Australia or Canada, let's take take a good look at the way we treat foreigners in India. Not a day passes by without rape, molestation or murder of some foreign tourist in India. Even minors are not spared and ironically the Indian govt. hasn't taken any steps so far to curb this teething problem.
Here's a recent incident
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Cities/Canadian-woman-molested-on-train/articleshow/4642439.cms
and the following travel advisory has been issued by US Dept. of state regarding travel to India
http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1139.html#crime
"U.S. citizens, particularly women, are cautioned not to travel alone in India. Western women continue to report incidents of physical harassment by groups of men. Known as ”Eve-teasing,” these incidents can be quite frightening. While India is generally safe for foreign visitors, according to the latest figures by Indian authorities, rape is the fastest growing crime in India. Among large cities, Delhi experienced the highest number of crimes against women. Although most victims have been local residents, recent sexual attacks against female visitors in tourist areas underline the fact that foreign women are also at risk and should exercise vigilance."
Shouldn't we be ashamed of such a warning? When something happens to us, we become cry babies and make hell lot of noise so that someone would garb our pinky fingers and lead us out of trouble. But at the same time we keep us ourselves insulated from the plight of foreigners in India. Isn't this sissy and selfish?
Even in North America, our attitude towards locals is smeared with extreme prejudice. If I collect a dollar every time a desi utters gora, kallu, makku or chinki, I would become a millionaire in months. The pot shouldn't call the kettle black.
I hate to say this but Indians are hypocrites to a large degree (maybe I need another thread for this one).
- We say the west is bad until we get a green card
- We stay vegetarianism is good, until we get an easy opportunity to turn non -veg.
- We say racial discrimination is bad but dare our daughter/sister marry a black dude!!
- We try to say we don't believe in caste system until our daughter/sister finds some dalit to marry!
- Anytime an Indian immigrant does not get a job in the west its racism to blame, not to realise may be a poor Eastern European or another desi got the job.
- We blame whites hire only whites, then when Indians run companies in the west, they hire only Indians, even when more skilled white people may be available.
- We frustrate when jobs go to the boss's relative, but when one of our relatives offers us a job .. well than its ok.
- We say we are moral culture, but India probably has one of the highest levels of sex crime .. most of it not reported.
- We hate female baby killings/abortions, but we listen quietly when a distant relative does this.
- We believe the white woman who has had a few relationships before marriage is trashier than the Indian husband who has secret affairs after marriage.
- We believe that we take care of our parents well, by reluctantly keeping them at home and raising issues and daily fights, whereas the white son who is constantly thinking and taking care of his dad at an elder home is worse.
OF COURSE these are generalizations, but less face it .. we all know people like this. Even I will admit I fit into 1 or 2 categories.
Sorry I know this is off topic.
I agree. You are - off the topic.
