Hi All,

I am in Singapore at present. My application is in process, hoping to land in Feb' 2005, but worried about IT jobs there.

pls give some info. about this :

1) How is the IT jobs in Toronto and Vancouver.
2) How long it may take to catch a job in Canada after landing.
Considering the fact that I am having around 9 years of
Software development and have worked in India, UK, Hong Kong
and Singapore. At present I am working with American multinational
company.
My Skills includes : Dataware Housing (Informatica),Oracle,
Sybase,VB,ASP,XML etc.

3) I have heard that experience and qualifications of other countries are not considered in Canada? is it right?

3) Is it possible to arrange job from Singapore itself.

4) If its very difficult to get a IT job then what other jobs we can take-up for survival?

5) How is the Garment jobs? My wife is Garment technologist from NIFT.

Thanks very much for such a wonderful information.

Cheers
Raj

Hi! Friends,

At the onset let me thank canadiandes.ca from the core of my heart - over telephone, after I got the lead from canadiandesi, I've finalised a p.g accomodation from India itself.

Contrary to my belief, immigration authorities were very co-operative. Though there was a big Queue in the Pearson Airport, immigration, customs clearance were absolutely hassle-free.

After I landed here, I observed that even the odd-jobs are very scarce now (at least that is what I'm told).

But thanx a lot to Biomed - He cared enough to give me a call to give the job leads & ph no. of placement agencies.

My settlement process till now was smooth-
- application of the P.R card automatically with the landing papers -( new immigrants need not to pay $50 for applying, it's included in the Right of Landing Fee)
- application for S.I.N card was done in the Brampton HRDC
- bank a/c opened the next day
-credit card application done - card exp within 7 wkg days.
- only OHIP Card applcation was not accepted, without P.R card or bank statement.

Can u open a bank a/c , get a cell phone/ land line connection and get a credit card without any reference? I mean if I know none there, can I get all above just after landing.

Hi all,

Thks for the very informative info on this thread. I was wondering however that why such basic things are so difficult to manage after landing in Canada. I am not complaining but wish to know a very basic solution to all these small initial problems. To sum up I guess there are following things which are most important to land up a good job quickest possible. For single or for the family.

1. A car.
2. A cellphone.
3. An appartment with the facility to cook yourself and near the supermarket.
4. A credit card/debit card.
5. A bank account.
6. Good references in Canada.
7. A driving license.
8. Laptop with internet connection.

I was wondering these things are most easy to obtain in India. May be u can get these things even as a new comers in just one day. However facts apart, I assume of some make shift solutions to above problems for the newcomers to Canada. I think of following solutions to above basic needs in the same order as above.

1. An old car perhaps can be bought at dirt cheap prices as happens in USA for short time visitors. For temporary purpose only.
2. A cellphone can be bought for temporary purpose from a Desi friend or somebody who wish to help. I am sure one can convince someone for this. I am sure it should not be expemsive.
3. If u r able to get a old car just for temp purpose, rent a 1 BR apartment in suburbs(any dam place which is dirt cheap and practical) at low rent and drive down to downtown. Don't worry u can always change the acco after getting a good job. May be it is difficult to book from India but take help of willing Desi.
4. I guess one can bring the Indian credit card valid globally for first few days and get a debit card from the money deposited to the bank (the seed money brought from India). Can I not use my Indian Debit Card with Stan Chart having a loan limit also.
5. I think this can be arranged with your MN bank in India itself giving all details of your trip to Canada.
6. This is tricky.
7. What about the Internaitonal Driving Lic. made in India and bought for under INR 1000. Again for temp purpose.
8. I am sure this is not an issue at all. Should be really cheap. After all second hand laptops are being brouht to India to make profits here.

I am a frequent traveller to European countries due to my job content. I find above solution workable for my short trips say for a month or two. I am not sure if these things work in Canada. The idea is to spend as little as possible till u land up a job.

Can somebody correct me on the above ideas.

Vijesh

Hello Nishitno1,

Which bank or agency did you go to ?
Were there any strings attached ( or junk fees) to the card ?

We tried getting an unsecured credit card. The bank told us to apply after 3-4 months.

Do let me know.

Thanks,
Aparna.
