After the OCI fee gouging fiasco, one would have thought that the CGI would have been more sensitive to the needs of their clients, rather than their own. But, they go out and do it again. Here is the notice posted on their website
"With effect from 6 July 2007, Consulate General of India, Toronto will accept only 45 (forty five) OCI applications on first-come-first-serve basis on all working days between 0900 to 1100 hours."
Another bone-headed move that is totally insensitive and non-cognizant about how to make things easier for applicants. You take half the day off and make it to the consulate well in time, but unfortunately after standing in the line for 2 hours, you realize that you are the 46th applicant for OCI that day.
How did the CGI arrive at this magic number of 45? What is the rationale or logic (rather lack of it) behind this move? If they really lack manpower and cannot process more than a certain number of applications, would it not be better, if they actually started an online appointment system (like the U.S visa) so atleast the applicant is guaranteed that their forms would be accepted, instead of praying that he or she is not Number 46 for the day?

Hi SS
I dont know if sending your ORIGINAL DOC"S for OCI is a good idea ..
I had obtained OCI myself so I know that they want to see all your ORIGINAL doc's . I will never rely on CGI to have my doc's verified and them resend me by post ( especially for the whole family which means 16 or more doc's including your Indian and Canadian PP ) but than that's me ..

As stated above, online system for generating tokens/appointment for OCI applications would be a good idea if Indian consulate cannot handle more than 45 applications in person. Is there a will to do it though is another question.
I did submit all my original documents for OCI via Xpresspost and got them back pretty quickly.
When my OCI card was ready to be picked up, they did send a generic email to me with cc: to someone else (I guess that person's OCI card was also ready to be picked up). Time to send another envelope for sending canadian passport back. $421 does not cover anything!

Can someone who has obtained an OCI recently let me know:
1. Part B of the application can be sumbitted soon after submission of part A which is done on-line, or you have to wait for some time?
2. Once you submit Part B with all your original documents, does the CGI keep your passport for two months or so till it issues the OCI? What if someone has to travel for business or personal reasons in between?
I shall be going to India in late December - do you think I will be able to get the OCI done if I apply say in next 10 days.

A U dont have to wait ..When u fill part "A" online it gives you a file no which can be used to check your status online .

A CGI cancels the Indian PP and give Canadian PP back . In case of emergencies you can always apply for visa in between .

A If all your documents are proper generally an individual receives OCI in 4-5 weeks ..
Hope it helps ..
