You are right. They do add compulsory 10% extra service charge on the bill to cover tips. They shouldn't be doing it
I dont understand our desis sometimes. Why are we so cheap?
10% service charge is not a new thing, have you both ever visited any other cuisines other than indian? i have, and many places add the 10% to the bill. Infact some rest. charge around 15% - 20%!!!. I bet if you went to a Canadian rest or any other place other than Indian you wouldnt complain about this. We only want to discriminate our own people. God knows why.These guys work so hard! you should see them run around trying to do thier best and with a smile, i usually tip them MORE for thier work. As i was standing at the cash register one day a customer asked why they add this 10% and they explained that for a small space like this we are over staffed (which is true) and people come in groups of 10 and more and leave no TIPS!!... they cant afford to run this place if it wasnt for this.
Second, where do you see the owners themselves cook? they work so hard to maintain the quality and give the best they can. The owner, his wife and two daughters cook (as i read in thier menu) and it shows. The taste never changes from one day to the other. In other rest, you go once and you can never expect the same taste again!!
why dont you go pick on places that serve garbage and old food that will literally hurt your health instead of complaining about service charge and space.
As desis we need to support families like this who are trying to do thier best and bring our name up... dont be picking on a family business, they might have to close down if people like you complain for petty things like this.
GURULUKSHMI IS A MUST VISIT, IF YOU LOVE AUTHENTICITY AND IF YOUR NOT CHEAP... THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO!!
i usually visit them on weekdays to avoid the wait... enjoy Gurulukshmi my fellow food lovers!!!!

By any chance it is the owner Mysore Iyengar at work ?.
When we open our window for the breeze it lets in mosquitoes also.
We should be ready for criticsm and try to correct our mistakes.
The owner tried to sell his place at newton center for a long time and wanted about 50K as goodwill and was not sucessful.
Many of my friends who have visited this place found the taste good but a big blow on the wallet.
In marketing you have a customer only if he repeats his visit. If the place is going to be big drain on the wallet you'll have a one night stand but not a marriage.
TIPS: To Insure Prompt Service and it is not a tax but a goodwill. The place should earn it by giving extra sambar or chutney not insist on it.
If we do not learn from mistakes and not be humble to correct ourselves for critiscm we will be HISTORY.
As a southie we never go to any of these humbug joints.
The only place we go is to Kwality in Steeles for value for money.
For southie food we buy MTR mix from desi store and make stuff at home.
Cheaper, value for money and safer.

We recently visited this Udupi place at Enfield place mississauga on a regular day.The food was stale, the dosas were burnt and the sambar was dead and gone. We also ordered bisibelebath and the bearer came after 30 minutes to inform us that it was stale. When we asked for upuma he came back after 15 minutes and mentioned it was not available.
I can definitely say that the quality at this joint has gone down the drain in the last 3 years.
If anybody wants to try this joint I would suggest to go there ONLY on weekends.
I think the Biochemist owner has made his money (that is he has recovered his fixed costs) and now operates on variable cost + profit.

It is not about being cheap. Indian restaurants have one of the lousiest customer service. They try to save by hiring less waiters, sometimes fresh immigrants who get either scared or have no idea when somebody asks any question.
Gurulaxmi has good food but it is indeed very crowded and noisy.
A recent article in Star. Gratuity is normally added for large groups. Also be aware of HST being charge on tip

first post and a century for Guru laxmi .... oh oh ..... isn't the poster over enthusiastic about GL .............. Sounds being one of them ... !!!
Why do the restaurants add tips -- compulsorily ?? They should jack up their product prices other wise the prices exhibited in the menu are an mis portrayed ..........
I would never visit such restaurants and its not true that ALL other places are trash ............ UDUPI is 2 thumbs up in terms of quality , quantity service and price ....
Guru Laxmi sucks in quantity as well as price as well as this compulsory service tax ................. I have been there once and had to pay twice that I would have normally paid as the servings were lesser ........ And the quality nothing much to write about ...... I never visited them again !!!!

For one , it s not as desis we are discriminating but they are the ones who are discriminating as in the poster's own words ... desi restaurants don't charge this service tax ........... So why are they ??? can't they increase the menu prices ............. This is a sly practice ...
Have you ever gone to Udupi ???? Their taste and quality as well as service is also unchanged over the past few years that I ve been visiting them ...
In fact to be honest , I find that we are lucky to have a restaurant like Udupi which is excellent in terms of quality , quantity , price , service and ambiance ...... In the Middle East such restaurants were quite a few but here I have been able to locate only one so far ........... a veggie S Indian restaurant ....
Sarvana Bhawan is also there but then as the other poster said ...... it burns a hole in your pocket ......
For new readers , please try all 3 and then decide whether what I am saying is correct or not ....

i joined this forum just to stop cheap desis ruin other's chance of visiting this place. I am a loyal customer of Gurulukshmi from the time they opened dosa corner in newin centre to now. SO i guess you can call me a part of them.
and again.. 10% service charge blah blah, my god stop crying, they don't "hide" it, its written on their menu and a board in the cash area.
The reason for my "over enthusiasm" about GL is simply because of this....
My business partner who runs a place in Chicago took one of the cooks from Udupi and did he have stories for us.
For those who don't know much about food and pricing : there are different grades of ingredients available to rest owners (first, second, third and of course garbage) Sri lankan rests buy garbage (sorry but its true, precisely why you hear "buy one dosa and get three free", well that's because they can afford it )
and then you have rest like udupi. madras dosa hut and all the rest who buy second and third grade, these guys are the one who slip in a few rotten tomatoes, onions, veggies etc and you wouldnt know it since its cooked through and hidden with spices. and they can afford to give you food for your "soft on your wallet" prices. how else do you think rests make money???
and we have rests' like Gurulukshmi, The Host and other few Quality before Quantity type of rests who use First grade, which hurts thier wallet and in turn will hurt yours. Unless you expect them to run a charity business stop complaining.
How do i know all this? before you jump your gun and call it an "inside job", i'd like you to read my name again. DESI FOOD LOVER, i've always wanted to knwo what i eat and love to tell others when i find good joints.... now that we are properly introduced i would like to end this post with the same thing i said before....
IF YOU LIKE QUALITY AND FRESH AUTHENTIC SOUTH INDIAN FOOD GO TO GURULUKSHMI. IF YOU ARE CHEAP AND WOULD MUCH RATHER EAT GARBAGE AND PAY LESS, PLEASE GO SOMEWHERE ELSE THANKS

All I can say in response to above post is that we frequent Udupi Madras Cafe quite regularly and not even once have we returned disappointed or with a bad stomach ...... Plus its always crowded and the service is great too !!!
