I was looking for the Gurulaskmi place today and couldnot locate it. Is it near plantation rd? or where Boston Pizza is?
Dosa Corner they have a sambar rap., hard to beat. For those from ME it will remind them of Oman Express and the one the other one they have in Karama.
BTW can any CD rate AMMA Chetinad Udipi in Dundas and Dixie. Yeah the MC behind Sussex place is good, whenever I have gone there, they never seem to have enough dosa's in buffet. As a result I have never eaten dosa, rest of the stuff was good.
I have been there once, it is definitly better than Sarvana bhava..
Sarvana bhavan is overated and overcrowded..

I would love to get some opinions on the quality, quantity and prices!
I went to this place after reading the overly positive reviews on this thread.
I tried the buffet and the food was * BAD * - reheated and overly oily. Idlis were reheated, the potato bhaji and the coconut chutney were smelling. To top it off, when I mentioned this to the owner, he just shrugged it off by saying everything was prepared freshly. In addition, at least half the buffet dishes were not ready when the restaurant opened and it took them 30 minutes to get everything ready.
All in all, nothing spectacular & very typical "desi" place.
The quality of the food and the service left a lot to be desired. IMO, Saravanna Bhavan is much better. The wait staff is courteous, the food quality is top notch.
This is surely my last visit to this place

You are absolutely right. This place ( GuruLakshmi) has amazing food. We went over the weekend but the place was not all that crowded. The service too was very good and overall the restaurant was clean. Rasam was great. My wife loved the pavbhaji dosa (a true Bombayite).
Thanks BL. The difference between this place and other places is quality and quantity.

Pros
Unbeatable south indian food, without question the best in Toronto. Try the mysore bhaji masala dosa or the rasa vadas, they're incredible.
Cons-
1. Cramped space, the decor looks pretty cheap.
2. Sloppy service. These guys used to run a take out kinda joint in a food court called "dosa corner" and they've recently graduated to a restaurant. The 'growing pains" are obvious.
3. Long waits on weekends. There's not enough room to hold all the people who want to get inside, so be prepared to stand outside the restaurant for some time.
You'll probably frown a bit before you get your food, but the taste and the quality of the fare makes the frustration digestable
Btw, nothing against Udipi (i'm not a fan of SBhavan), they have good stuff too, I do like the thali there. But GuruLakshmi takes the cake in authenticity.

BL,
South Indian food differs from state to state and within different parts of the state. My observation is that the way they prepare same recipe ( for example "Sambhar" ) is different from place to place within the Southern states.
