Basically i come across many indian who are good in their work and even good in communication but they were literally given laid offs only because they were indians and white are afraid or jealous and hence they don't want indians to rise up. That is the reason why most of the indians in good jobs are given laid offs. I do agree that some may not suffer such a attitude but that is very exceptional.

My concern is that if this is the case why canadian govt calls more immigrants especially indians. I do agree that just like lawyer chandresh few people won't accept this fact but if you really think hard you will realise that directly or indirectly you have been a victim of bigotry in canada..

I would like suggesstions from everyone...what a person should do if he has become a victim of purely racisim. Any laws that can help me or any other solution...i welcome all.

thanks,

shah

Two questions.
Did you get laid off in this way?
How do you rate your English communication skills?

How naive of you to assume what lawyer chandresh was asking - how prejudiced are you can be seen from your postings.

I simply asked what did you mean by 'they'

I looked up the dictionary and found the meaning of bigot as under:

One who is strongly partial to one's own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ.

And therefore I was asking you this question. Yes I have faced bigotry time and again - from my very first job in life which was given to me not because of my qualifications or experience, but because I was a marvari!

In Singapore and Indonesia again I could never get jobs with local Indians - who were maily Tamilians or Sikhs, because I was not one of them. However, once again, I was able to get jobs easily with other marvaris just when they heard that I was a marvari too working for a marvari company!

And so I have experienced bigotry much before I landed in Canada - more in India, and to a great extent in Singapore too!

Don't ASSUME - you are making an ass of only U, NOT me!

Chandresh

I bet you would call a "canadian" racist if he/she told you that your English needs some serious help. Would you not?

And go ahead and call me a wannabe gora for pointing it out. And while we're sticking to the routine, let's end it with the classic "I have good job, but I concern about other immigrant!" Or another one "People from China don't speak English. So why should I learn?"

Not saying racism does not exist here, it sure does. The extent to which it exists however is much lower than most other countries (especially the US of A). The problem many times is the expectation immigrants come with. A lot of us (especially the emotional bunch) expect every local to hold our hands and give us a hug every time they see us. We expect them to know all about our trials and tribulations in our daily lives because of the move we made. We expect them all to know that we've come to their land with stars in our eyes and they should treat us with sensitivity and empathy all the time. They should know what we're going through and everybody should be nice to us.

Look at it from their perspective sometimes. When I came initially, I was going to a job fair. At the bus-stop, I met a fellow desi who was going to the same place, he had been in Canada for only a couple of weeks himself at that time. We chatted and boarded the bus once it arrived. I had my change ready but the other guy had to dig for it. It also took him time to recognize the Canadian coins. During this time, the whole bus was waiting. The driver (who was white) gave him a look and shook his head. Finally when we sat down, what was this guy's first comment? "They're all racist!". He didn't realize that the driver had deadlines himself, he had to reach his destination by a certain time or he'd be off schedule. And if someone else had made a crass comment, they would've been getting late for work as well and their bosses would not be too pleased about it. What most desis would react to as racism was probably just someone frustrated about getting late.

Don't expect everybody to be nice everytime, realize that they're working within their own constraints. Even if they're good people, they may not have the time to be nice to you. And don't be so sensitive that a gesture or some simple words will ruin your day.

The point is being able to differentiate between rudeness and racism.

Here is a viewpoint I came across in a community (as contrasted to an ethnocultural) newspaper- meaning serving a community like Hamilton, Brampton, Scarborough....not a community like Indian, Chinese, Philipino....

Note that Hindi in the English script is included.

...........................................................................................................

The Race Card- who’s dealing?

I wish to bring to your attention that I feel it is more the Indian community that points out differences amongst each other than it is the Canadians against the Indians.

When a desi meets another, the invariable question is where are you from? And thereafter, one tries to decipher from the name whether the person is Benagali, Tamil, Punjabi, Gujarati, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi, etc. Then one asks where the other is from. Vadodara, Chandigarh, Delhi, Cochin etc.
Then when one gets to know another better, it is "Aap Radha Soami hain?" "Aap Khalsa hain?" "Aap Aga Khan ka Ismaili hain?" etc. And thus biases are conjured up at times.

When we can "get over it", only then should we expect other nationalities to "get over it with us”.

It's just human nature I guess. I also find myself guilty of asking people who speak accented English, where they are from and have made many friends originally from Egypt, Bulgaria, Poland, Morocco, Cameroun, Congo, Djibouti, Iran, Russia, Metis Indians , Phillipinos, Chinese-you name it. Needless to say, I have many friends amongst Canada born and bred folks as well.

Despite all the differences- which I think should exist and will always- it is imperative that one respects all cultures and assimilates with all of them as well.

Perhaps it is a bad example to use but can you imagine if you wanted to go out for dinner and all that was available was McDonald's? No Thai food, no Chinese, no Korean, no Lebanese, no Belgian and no Indian?

Yeah, I welcome the diversity but not the discrimination and racism that go along with it.It should be accepted and explored. I welcome it when people ask me where I am from and I in return ask them where they are from. So much can be learned by this and one may even dispel pre- conceived stereotype notions.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I personally enjoyed and related to the opening paragraphs. I imagine it must be true among the Chinese (or other nationalities) as well, depending upon which province or area they are from "biases are conjured" amongst themselves even far away from home.

What the writer forgot to mention in my opinion is that when one newly arrived Indian meets another who has been here several years , the newbie exclaims " but you are not desi anymore" (happens to me everytime)and will shy away and go look for newly arrived ones.

Of late, I reply "you're right, I'm not desi I'm a Canadiandesi!":)

BL,

Very well said on the entire post of yours

In my opinion, regarding differentiating between rudeness and racism, the more one is insecure and lacks self-confidence, the less the ability of that person to differentiate the above.
