Hi

Depending upon the Province you move to, you may need health insurnace to cover the first 3 months. (Several Provinces have this \"qualifying period\" for both newcomers to the country and Canadians moving between provinces).

The decision to take out insurance is purely down to your own risk levels/health, whether you even need it for the province you move to and also if you fall under the qualifying period.

Please note that every canadian citizen and Permanent Resident is entitled to the basic healthcare system that is free. Most employers give coverage for the \"extra's\" like chiropractic and physiotherapy. Dental treatment is not normally covered by the state or provincial plans.

Prescription drugs are not free though again most employers benefits packages give coverage for reimbursement of around 80%.

This is a huge subject so for all the detailed info for each province go to http://www.onestopimmigration-canada.com/healthcare.html

and make sure you are fully informed. If you are not covered by your employer the Blue Cross is a non profit organisation that is worth exploring.

Good Luck

AFAIK, advertising/marketing of one's products/services is not allowed in Charcha.

Hi Sudesingh

I apologise if I have contravened the rules - I have seen several posts by Pramod Chopra blatantly selling his services throughout the different posts - real estate and mortgages/financial planning etc. As he is a senior Desi I assumed it was ok to draw attention to ones work.

My site is an information site - yes I have some ads on there to help pay the costs of running the site, but I'm sure you will agree its prime purpose is to educate. The information on the site is totally free to anyone and everyone and at no point do I charge any of my site visitors a fee to access it. The links from my site are to authoritive sources and/or experts - no pressure is applied to buy anything or hire anyone from the site.

I make it clear that I am not an Immigration or Resettlement professional in any way, just someone who has emigrated to Canada and been lucky enough to have made a good start. I am a project manager by day and once my kids are asleep I work on the site - I enjoy researching and writing and have received excellent feedback from site visitors. Despite making multiple visits and having family in the country, my wife and I are still amazed at how much we didn't know about life in Canada hence the website which will hopefully help people avoid some of the mistakes or assumptions that we were unfortunate to make.

Once again, I apologise if I have appeared to be undermining the rules - I am only attempting to draw attention to what I believe is an excellent resource for both newcomers and residents.

Best Regards

Further to the previous posts - the Canadian health system is certainly different to most. Yes there is a great degree of free coverage but also a fair bit of very expensive costs for the unlucky/unprotected.

One major problem any newcomer (immigrant or not) to an area faces is finding a family doctor to register with. They are not always readily available and you may have to wait months on a waiting list depending upon the area you live in. We had to travel into the city (we live 25km away) for the first 18 months we lived here so see our family doctor while we waited on the list. Ensure the first thing you do on your arrival is register for the provincial plan and find a doctor!

Another vital aspect of life in Canada is the ability to give first aid. If you have kids or are away on vacation in a park/wilderness, please bear in mind that its a long way for help to come so if you can help your selves in even the most basic fashion it could be enough to save a loved ones life.

The Canadian Red cross and Saint Johns ambulance hold excellent courses for around C$150.00 - they are non profit making organisations and give first class training.

Good Luck
